Richard D. “Dick” Beaver

Richard D. “Dick” Beaver, age 90 longtime Galena resident, died Wednesday morning July 29, 2009 at Village of Westerville Assisted Living Center.
He was born on January 18, 1919 in Berkshire Township to the late Howard and Nellie (Baker) Beaver. A graduate of Sunbury High School in 1937 he excelled in track and he earned a degree in geology from Muskingum College. Dick was a US Army Veteran of WW II, serving in the campaigns of Central Europe and Northern France.
On a blind date 62 years ago, he met his wife and loving companion: Grace (Vining). Together they raised a family and shared a wonderful and fun loving life. They traveled extensively, with Alaska being his favorite.
A resident of Galena for over 50 years, Dick served as little league coach, assistant Scout master of Troop 300, served on village council. He was a member of the Galena United Methodist Church for 59 years and had served as a Sunday school teacher for the high school class.
His favorite activity was golfing and bowling of which he was a longtime member of both Sunbury leagues. He took up running again at the age of 59 and participated in several marathons. Dick served as president of the Big Walnut Lions Club in 1985, receiving a 100% Presidents Award and was bestowed the honor of Lion of the year. He was also a member of the American Legion Post No. 457.
One to never meet a stranger, Dick loved life and his family of whom he was most dedicated and proud. He will be remembered for his fun loving ways, his kindness and consideration for others, warm smile, and jolly expression of “Hey neighbor”.
In addition to his wife Grace he is survived by son: Jim (Marty) Beaver of Marion, daughter: Joyce Beaver of Westerville, Grandchildren: Molly (Wes Levings), Brandon (Jena Parthemore), Emily Beaver, Ricky Beck, brother: John H. Beaver of Winter Haven, FL, nieces, nephews, extended family, and a host of neighbors whom he considered friends.
Preceded in death by siblings: Benson “Ben” and Robert Beaver, Ruth Lewis, and Georgianna Hall.
Friends may call Friday from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. at DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, SR’s 3 at 61, Sunbury where services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. with Rev. Jeff Croft officiating, interment will follow in Galena Cemetery.
