Raymond G. Saunders, 88 of Wilmington, former longtime Sunbury resident, died Sunday evening, November 2, 2008 at Edgewood Manor in Westerville.

Born on March 23, 1920 in Condit to the late Edward and Agnes (Jacobus) Saunders. A graduate of Hartford High School, he served in the US Navy during WW II. He began his adult life as a farmer, and then worked as an aircraft design engineer for North American Aviation and engineered industrial diamonds for General Electric. Ray also served on the Board of Public Affairs for Sunbury and as a volunteer fireman.

Preceded in death by his wife of 60 years Jane H. (Benson) on September 2, 2005 whom he married September 8, 1945 in Chicago.

He was a 60 year member of Condit Presbyterian Church, American Legion Post #457 in Sunbury and associate member at the New Smyrna Beach United Church of Christ, where they wintered for 15 years. He enjoyed camping as a former member of the Triangle Traveler Camping Club and was a true outdoorsman who loved golfing, fishing, boating, and woodworking. Always the teacher, he treasured time spent with his family and especially his grandchildren.

He is survived by Sons: Gary (Deborah) of Sunbury, Bruce (Fayanne) of Wilmington, Raymond of Columbus, Dean (Jane) of Westerville. 8 Grandchildren and 5 Great Grandsons, Sisters: Dorothy Justice of Condit, and Frances Wood of Delaware.

Also preceded in death by Sisters: Florence Saunders, Mildred Morton, Erma Clauson, Ethel Swick, Louise Stark, and Brother George Saunders.

Friends may call Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. at the DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, SR 3 at 61, Sunbury. Funeral services will be held Thursday 11:00 a.m. at the Condit Presbyterian Church with Rev. David Judd of The Presbyterian Church of Wilmington officiating. Interment will follow in the Trenton Cemetery with military honors provided by the Delaware County Veterans Association.
