Phyllis E. Beck McClelland
December 29, 1914 ‒ November 20, 2007
Mount Gilead, Ohio
Phyllis E. Beck McClelland, age 92, formerly of State Route 95 E., Mount Gilead, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday morning, November 20, 2007, at the Morrow County Hospital Extended Care Facility.
She was born in Mount Gilead on December 29, 1914, the daughter of the late Arthur and Alma Lepp Beck. Phyllis graduated from Fredericktown High School in the Class of 1931 and received her associate’s degree in elementary education from Bowling Green State University in 1933.
On December 28, 1940, Phyllis married her loving husband of over 56 years, Harold McClelland, in Ashland, Kentucky, by her cousin, Rev. Oscar Sutherland. He preceded her in death on February 24, 1997.
With her father teaching for years in a one room school house, Phyllis learned at an early age how to be good with children. She taught in the Morrow County Schools, Iberia Elementary School, Shelby Elementary School, Edison Elementary School, and lastly at the Mount Gilead Elementary Schools until she retired in 1974.
A lifelong resident of Morrow County, Phyllis was a member of the Morrow County Farm Bureau, Morrow County Historical Society, Green Pair Garden Club, Twin Pines Farm Bureau Council, Morrow County Republican Party, Seniors on Center, Williamsport Grange for over 60 years, Couples Bridge Club, Morrow County Retired Teachers’ Association, Mothers’ Club, Sorosis II, the Morrow County Health Board, and of the former Guiding Star Larkin Club.
A woman of faith, Phyllis was a member of the Mt. Gilead Church of Christ and formerly a member of the Waterford Church of Christ, where she also enjoyed the Round Lake Christian Service Center.
With a love for music, Phyllis enjoyed playing the piano and listening to Christian music and the Grand Ole Opery.
Until she lost her eye sight, Phyllis’ favorite pastime was reading.
To Phyllis, family was her number one priority and she showed love and affection in her own way. A fun grandmother, she had a knack for knowing what her grandchildren would want. Together they would “go and do,” and even went to Broadway shows.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughter and son-in-law: Bonnie & John Drake of Mount Gilead; two granddaughters: Stacia (Jay) Barnes of Johnstown, and Alicia (Ron) MacMichael of Mount Gilead; one great-granddaughter: Breaunna MacMichael; one sister: Betty Talbot of Galion; one sister-in-law: Ruth Beck of Mount Gilead; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Including her parents and husband, Phyllis was preceded in death by her brother: George Beck, and by her sister: Doris Ruhl.
Her family will greet friends on Friday from 4 – 7 PM at the Snyder Funeral Home, 76 S. Main St., Mt. Gilead, where funeral services will be held on Saturday at 11:00 AM with Pastor Doug Bryan, Pastor Don Linn, and Pastor Ray Linn officiating. Burial will follow in Bryn Zion Cemetery.
