Phyllis Ann Haviland

July 12, 1931 ‒ June 26, 2016

Marion, Ohio

Phyllis Ann Haviland (nee Davis), 84, passed away quietly early Sunday morning on June 26, 2016.  She was in the presence of loving family members at the time of her passing.

Phyllis (also known as “Pat”) was born on July 12, 1931 in Marion, Ohio, the daughter of William and Irene Davis.  She married Robert Hugh Haviland of Marion on October 2, 1949.  Together they had four children: William (Bill), Robert (Bob), Debra (Debbie), and Bryan.

Phyllis was a loving Christian friend, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was incredibly non-judgmental and supportive of others.  She will be remembered for her independence, caring nature, practical wisdom and innocent humor.

She graduated from Marion Harding High School in 1949.  Educationally, she excelled in good penmanship, application of grammar and reading.  She enjoyed dancing, singing, roller skating, bowling and played a variety of word and card games, with a particular penchant for euchre.

She was a devoted member of First United Church of Christ where she volunteered at community breakfasts and other events.  She also volunteered at Marion General Hospital, where she worked in the gift shop.

She especially loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and will be deeply missed by her large circle of family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Bob and sister, Eileen Crissinger.  She is survived by her four children: Bill (Ann) of LaCrosse, WI, Bob (Jennifer) of Marion, OH, Debra Deerwester (Mark) of Kenton, OH, and Bryan (Georgeanna) of Worthington, OH; 12 grandchildren: Samuel (Renae), Julia, Mark Haviland and Kate Schroeder (Bill’s children), Benjamin (Breanne) and Nicholas (Bob’s children), Ryan (Hilary) Houston, Holly (Gabe) Meister, and Heather (Tyson) Kelly (Debra’s children), Andrew (Allison), Matthew (Desere), and Annalee Haviland (Bryan’s children); 10 great-grandchildren: Abigail, Grace, and Issac Meister (Holly’s children); Bailee Phillips and Alleigh Maxwell (Heather’s children); Kaleb, Ava, and Nora Houston (Ryan’s children), Layne Haviland (Nicholas’ child), and Riley Haviland (Matthew’s child).

A memorial service will be held at First United Church of Christ, 326 South Prospect St., Marion, Ohio, on Thursday, June 30, 2016 at 7 p.m.  A visitation will precede the memorial service from 5 p.m. until the time of the service.  In lieu of flowers please send gifts in her memory to First United Church of Christ.  The family wishes to especially thank her caregiver Lois Shuler and Dr. Arvinder Bhinder and staff, for their loving and compassionate care that improved and extended the quality of her life during her last years, in which she battled life-threatening illness with grace and courage.

“If I could give you one thing in life, I would give you the ability to see yourself through my eyes.  Only then, would you realize how special you are.”

  • I was very saddened to hear of Phyliss’s passing, or “Grandma Pat” as I came to know her. She was a caring, loving member of the family and I’m glad I had the chance to know her. I’ll always remember her kind nature and the immense amount of love and affection she displayed when surrounded by family. She will be missed by all who had the chance to make her acquaintance.
