BELLVILLE: Peter “Pete” Frech, age 90, formerly of 426 South Main Street, Bellville, and more recently of Briarwood Care Center, Mansfield, died Tuesday morning February 13, 2001 in MedCentral Mansfield Hospital following a long illness.

He was born July 18, 1910 in St. Louis, MO, to Peter and Magdalena Bierley Frech, spent most of his youth in Austria Hungary during WWI, and returned to this country at the age of 16.

Pete had worked at the Ford Garage in Crestline, and later with Swan Rubber Company in Bucyrus during their formative years.

He moved from Bucyrus to Bellville in 1945, and worked at National Seating in Mansfield. He retired in 1974 with ten years of service with General Motors, where he worked as a welder.

He was a member of Bellville Lodge #376 F&AM; Bellville Chapter #291 Order of Eastern Star; Irvin Hiskey Post #535 American Legion; and the United Auto Workers Union.

Pete loved drag racing, and was a pioneer of the sport in North Central Ohio. A member of the National Hot Rod Association, he was named Motor Trend Magazine Mechanic of the Year and in 1964 was National Drag Race Champion.

An avid fisherman, Pete spent winters in Key Largo, FL.

He is survived by his wife Esther M. Kissling Frech, whom he married January 2, 1932; two daughters and sons-in-law Helen & Bill Ridenour of Bellville and Mary Ann & Bill Jackson of Mansfield; a son and daughter-in-law Peter W. & Carroll Frech of Palm Coast, FL; eleven grandchildren and their spouses Sharon & John Dodds of Bellville, Randy & Toni Ridenour of Mansfield, Bill & Cindy Ridenour of Bellville, Rick & Susan Foss of Lucas, Ronald & Pam Foss of Lucas, Randy & Sharon Foss of Loudonville, Rob & Debi Foss of Lucas, Joey & Lorie Jackson of Loudonville, Kim Jackson & Paul Landsburg of Raleigh, NC, Tonja & Mike Coon of Savannah, GA, and Phillip & Linda Frech of Mansfield; 33 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; and a niece and her husband Eileen & Homer Hedges of Tiffin.

In addition to his parents, a sister Mary Mergel Simmers preceded him in death.

Friends may call Thursday February 15, 2001 from 2-4 & 6-8 pm in the Bellville Snyder Funeral Home, where a Masonic Memorial Service will follow after 8 pm, to which the family invites all to attend. The funeral service will be held Friday at 10:30 am in the funeral home. The Rev. H. E. “Howdie” Burnett will officiate. A committal service and burial will follow in Nevada Cemetery in Wyandot County at 3 pm.
