Centerburg, Ohio

Paul “Rex” Altizer, age 80 of Centerburg passed away Thursday, March 7, 2013 at St. Ann’s Hospital surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on November 20, 1932 in Tazewell County, Virginia to the late Louie Sr. and Carrie (Beavers) Altizer. A graduate of Sparta High School in 1953, he went on to serve in the 11th Airborne Division of the US Army. Returning from the service he would marry Judy (Hulse), his beloved wife of almost 57 years. Together they raised a wonderful family and shared in the joys of life.

He worked over 40 years, self-employed in the drywall and plaster business. Through his years in the business, he became a skilled master in both materials, a true “artist on stilts”. His craft became a shared family affair. Because of those efforts and hard work he proudly assisted in the providing college education for his children. He was also a member of Ohio Local 1 Plaster’s and Cement Mason Union of more than 18 years.

Family was always a top priority for Rex. He enjoyed attending his children’s games and activities as they grew up in Centerburg. He continued to be an avid fan of all Centerburg High School sports, even when one of his own was not participating.

A collector of antique bottles and arrow heads, he enjoyed hunting for them as well as mushrooms. He was also an avid fan of NASCAR. Rex was a Ford-man through and through; he enjoyed his antique cars and tractors. He regularly participated in local parades and festivals. Also a gifted gardener, he freely shared the bounty of his large vegetable garden with his family, friends and neighbors.

Always charting his own course, Rex worked hard and played hard in every endeavor. He enjoyed snow skiing, a shared family event and favored the Rocky Mountains.

A true patriarch, he will be remembered for his work ethic, strong will and love of family.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of almost 57 years: Judy, children: Dr. Stan (Nancy) Altizer of Broadview Heights, Cheryl Altizer of Austintown, Treva (Ken) Gabriel of North Lima, David (Brenda) Altizer of Centerburg, Ryan (Heather) Altizer of Sunbury, 11 grandchildren, brothers: Warren (Peg) of Reynoldsburg, Dewey and Norm (Susie) Altizer both of Centerburg, sisters: Mary (Jim) Stiffler of Sparta, and Betty (Jim) Mossholder of Mt Vernon.
