Paul R. Charles

May 09, 1928 ‒ April 23, 2018

Fredericktown, Ohio

Paul Raymond Charles, 89, went home to be with his wife on April 23, 2018, after a brief illness. He was in peace, without pain and in the presence and love of his family. Paul was born to Viola (Fleming) Charles and Wayne Charles on May 9, 1928, in Bellville.

Paul was a resident of Palmyra and a long-standing member of the Palmyra Church of Christ. As a member of that church, Paul served as an Elder, a Deacon, as a Sunday school teacher and as a custodian for 34 years alongside his wife, Pat.

Paul graduated from Bellville High School in 1946. He was employed by the Martin Hardware Co. in Mansfield for over 40 years, where he served as General Manager of the downtown store and as a Vice President of the company. In his retirement, he was employed by Stoodt’s grocery in Bellville until the age of 85.

Paul was a man of few words, but had a sharp, inquisitive mind and a kind heart. In his 80s, Paul asked for and received a computer. He spent many hours surfing the internet and especially enjoyed following the travels of certain truck drivers on YouTube. Paul was also an avid watcher of sports, especially OSU football, the Cincinnati Reds, the Cincinnati Bengals, and Fredericktown High School football. He also enjoyed old TV shows, with his favorite being The Andy Griffith Show. Paul lived an independent life and enjoyed his daily breakfast visits to McDonald’s or Burger King, weekly community meals at the Senior Center in Fredericktown, and monthly spaghetti dinners at the Lutheran Church in Bellville with his sister, Martha.

Paul is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, William P. Charles (wife, Pattie Purdy Charles), and a daughter and son-in-law, Lori K. (Charles) Cramer (husband, Seth M. Cramer), all of Worthington, Ohio; and sisters Ruth (Charles) DeLong of Mansfield, Virginia (Charles) Savage of Fredericktown, and Martha Charles of Bellville; and three nieces and two nephews.

In addition to his wife, Pat, who he was married to for 68 years after meeting at the Bellville Street Fair, he was also preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter, Sondra Sue Charles, and his brother, Leslie Charles.

Services will be held on Friday, April 27, 2018, at 11:00 am at the Palmyra Church of Christ, 21184 Zolman Road, Fredericktown, Ohio. Calling hours will be held on Thursday, April 26, 2018, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm, at the same location.

Memorial contributions may be made to World Missionary Evangelism, P.O. Box 660800, Dallas, TX 75266 or the charity or mission of your choice.

  • Paul and Pat Charles have been our neighbors ( just across the field) since we married in 1974. Paul stepped down gradually and gracefully from his many busy work schedules over the past years, but was still actively out and about on a daily basis. It will certainly seem so unusual, not to see his smile, or the lights glowing from the Charles house. However, he is now home – – with Pat , his Lord, and their little daughter. God bless Lori & Bill & their families with strength & guidance through the journeys of these next days. Our thoughts & heartfelt prayers, Randy, Nancy, Michelle & John Gregg

  • To the families, sorry for the passing of your father, many blessings and prayers at this time of sorrow.

  • Please be encouraged:

For I well know the thoughts that I am thinking towards you, declares Jehovah, thoughts of peace, and not of calamity, to give you a future and a hope.

    Jeremiah 29:11
