May 05, 1943 ‒ January 24, 2014
Pat Sparks was a rare and beautiful gem. She sparkled as a volunteer in and around Bucyrus, her gift as a blood donor to the American Red Cross was priceless, and the glint of her altruistic personality was truly a “Spark” in the community.
Beautiful as a flawless diamond, Pat Sparks passed away Friday afternoon January 24, 2014 in her Bucyrus home. She was 70. Born Patricia Ann Haendiges May 5, 1943 in Lodi, she was the daughter of William Haendiges and Dorothy (Johnson) Ketchum. Pat was graduated from Midview High School (Grafton) in 1961 and earned her Bachelor’s degree in Education in 1965 from Bowling Green State University, where she was a member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority.
In April of that year she married Fred Sparks, and they moved to Bucyrus in 1975 from Sylvania. Pat taught business classes at Colonel Crawford High School, and served as the school’s yearbook advisor for 20 years, intramural bowling league advisor and senior class advisor. She retired from the school district in 2000 after a teaching career of more than 30 years. She was a member of Woodlawn United Methodist Church, and sang in the church’s Heritage Faith Choir. She enjoyed bridge and euchre clubs for many years, but it was her community service that made her invaluable. She invested in her community by giving the gift of blood ~ the gift that keeps on living ~ and had donated over 22 gallons to the American Red Cross. Pat was a member of the Crawford County Concert Association for many years, and proudly served on its board of directors. In more recent years she delivered Meals-on-Wheels to shut-ins of the Bucyrus community, and had served as Campaign Marketing Manager for the Bucyrus Area United Way.
Her treasured family includes her husband of 48 years Fred Sparks; their sons Eric (Jayme) Sparks of Bucyrus and Ryan (fiancée Caren Murdock) Sparks of Columbus; grandsons Brock Sparks and Bryant Sparks; a brother Kevin Ketchum of Boston, Massachusetts; a sister Joan (Bob) Onderko of La Vernia, Texas; a sister-in-law Sharon (Roy) Weimert of The Villages, FL; and her beloved dogs Sophie and Sheba.
The Sparks family will receive friends Tuesday, January 28, 2014 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. in Woodlawn United Methodist Church, 1675 Hopley Avenue, Bucyrus, where her funeral service will be held Wednesday at 10:30 a.m..
