Ory Ray Hedding
June 19, 1919 ‒ May 26, 2008
Ory Ray Hedding, age 88, of Marion and formerly of Martel, died on Monday afternoon, May 26, 2008, at the Marion General Hospital.
He was born on the family farm near Martel, Ohio, on June 18, 1919, the son of the late Ray and Anna Struthers Hedding. Ory graduated from Martel High School in the Class of 1937.
For eighty five years, Ory lived on the family farm, where he farmed and cared for the land his entire life. In 2004, he regretfully moved away from the farm, moving to the Sterling House due to his health.
In addition to farming, Ory worked as a boiler engineer at Marion General Hospital and at the Marion Correctional Institute, where he would retire with 25 years of service in 1989.
In his retirement years, Ory met a special friend during a trip to Alaska, Virginia Kantner, whom he would cherish. After Alaska, they continued traveling the world together, enjoying trips to Hawaii, Australia, and Europe. They also enjoyed ballroom dancing.
A gentleman in every sense of the word, Ory would always be helpful and he was not afraid to share his affections or give everyone a hug. Similar to his brother, he often teased his family and friends.
Ory was a member of the Grace Baptist Church, Oliver Lodge # 447 in Caledonia, Marion Chapter 22 of Royal Arch Masons, and Marion Commandery # 36, and he was a 32 degree of the Ancient Scottish Rite of the Valley of Columbus.
He will be missed by his sister, Fay (Robert) Burgener of Columbus; sister-in-law, Pauline Kaelber Hedding of Marion; three nieces: Kay (Steve) Mitchell of Uniontown, OH, Gay (Mike) Beck of Plain City, OH, and Jyl Burgener of Plainfield, IN; a nephew, William Burgener of San Diego, CA; two great-nephews: Mike Mitchell of New York, NY, David Mitchell of Louisville, KY; three great nieces; Angela Beck of Plain City, OH, Heather Beck of Charlotte, NC, and Cristin Noe of Plainfield, IN; a great-great-nephew and great-great-niece, Gaven and Cadence Mitchell of Louisville, KY; and his special friend, Virginia Kantner of Wapakoneta, OH.
Including his parents, Ory was preceded in death by his brother, Jay R. Hedding.
His family will greet friends on Monday, June 2, 2008, from 5 – 7 p.m. at the Denzer-Farison-Hottinger & Snyder Funeral Home, 360 E. Center St., Marion, where services celebrating his life will be held on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Bill Middleton officiating. Burial will follow in Iberia Cemetery.
