Nicholas “Nick” DePolo, age 74, of Mount Vernon died Tuesday April 19, 2016 at his home surrounded by his family. Nick was born December 14, 1941 in Mount Vernon to Carl Joseph DePolo and Nina (Arrington) DePolo Llewellyn. Nick attended Mount Vernon High School and served in the United States Army. Nick was a “people person” always helping out friends. He enjoyed his morning coffee group and swapping “war stories” with his buddies over lunch. However what he enjoyed the most was being a grandpa and spending time with the grandkids.

Surviving are his wife of almost 48 years Peggy (Collins) DePolo, his son Jay (Lindsey) DePolo: grandchildren, Megan Randall, Derrick DePolo and Ashlynn Brokaw; several great grandchildren; brothers Joseph “Joe” (Kim) DePolo of Marion and Phillip (Jan) DePolo of Mason and his sister Cheryl Butler of Mount Vernon. Besides his parents, Nick was preceded in death by his son Mark Edward DePolo, stepfather George Llewellyn, his brothers Antonio “Tony” DePolo and David Llewellyn.

The family will receive friends on Sunday from 1PM to 3PM at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home, 201 Newark Road, Mount Vernon, Ohio 43050. Private burial will be in Mound View Cemetery.

  • I have lost a friend that I have known for some time now. Nick was always quick with a joke and always a pleasure to be around.

I was fortunate to work with him for the past few years and enjoyed seeing him everyday.

Nick will be dearly missed by many and I am proud to be able to call him my friend.

    Rest peacefully my friend.

  • We are so sorry to find out that Nick passed. I have many great memories. He always made me laugh!! That was Nick.

  • We were sadden to hear of Nick’s passing and did not realize he was that ill. He was a great neighbor and we will miss him. Dan and Nick would often times be mowing at the same time and ride their mowers over to one another’s house to visit. Nick always had a tale to tell. In the fall Nick’s leaves would blow over in our yard and he would come over and say we stole his leaves. He and Dan would work together to get them cleaned up. They would often times be hanging up Christmas lights at the same time and would yell back and forth who had up the most lights. Nick had a great personality and a good sense of humor. We have lots of fun memories of him. Our thoughts are with you and your family.

  • Heartbreaking news. I met Nick many years ago when I was a young waitress at the Picnic Pub, and then went on to work for him at Nationwide in Mt Vernon for a few years. I remember his sense of humor the very day I met him and he was not a stranger for long, lol. He, Peggy and Jay also became clients of mine for many years in support of my growing business, which always meant so much to me. He was the best boss who treated you like an old friend as well. There was always a good laugh when Nick was around. I have been blessed with many great memories. Rest in peace Nick, you will be greatly missed by all that knew you.

  • I met Nick when I was in my early 20’s and he and I instantly had a connection and we quickly became friends. I will always remember Nick as a fun guy who truly loved helping people. I was one of the many people Nick helped and his generosity and friendship changed the course of my life.

Many people probably don’t know this but back in 1989 Nick opened his doors to me and he created a place in the corner of his East High Street insurance office for me, my buddy Bob Phillips and our friend and office manager Kim Preston (Mohn) so we had a small office to start the REMAX real estate office.

Some of the best memories with Nick happened on Fridays at 12 noon in his office. We would have a lunch meeting with Nick and his insurance team (Carol and Janet) and our real estate group in Nick’s office kitchen eating pizza. We would spend an hour each week talking about life, listening to Nick’s favorite joke of the week, we talked about business and we loved discussing the latest and greatest Zig Ziglar sales and motivational tapes that we had just listened to that week. Nick didn’t know it back then but he was my mentor and without his help the REMAX real estate office would have likely never gotten off the ground.

The thing I will probably miss the most is each time we were together right before we would go our separate ways Nick would turn around at the doorway and say something like “Did you hear the one about the guy who…”. He was always saying something funny that had me in tears laughing.

We all lost a great guy this week – I will miss you Nick!!!

His smiling face will be missed by many people! Thoughts and prayers to his family.
