Neil Amsbaugh, age 84, of Summit Drive, Fredericktown, passed away on Monday March 1, 2004 in Fredericktown after a long illness. He was born on April 12, 1919 in Fredericktown to the late Nathan Marion and Kate (Cunningham) Amsbaugh.
Neil worked 39 years for the Westinghouse of Mansfield and retired on April 1, 1981. He was an honorary retiree member of the International Union of Electrical, Radio, and Workers, Westinghouse Employee Association.
He was most proud of to be a member of the 379th Bomb Group of Army Air Corps in Kimbolton Hunts, England where he was stationed for 2 years, 1 month and 29 days. He had served as a mechanic of B-17’s during his time in England. He was a member of the 8th Air Force Historical Society.
Mr. Amsbaugh was also a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars post #4027 of Mount Vernon, Fredericktown American Legion #500, Moose Lodge #824 of Mount Vernon and past president of the Retired Men’s Club. He took an active part in the Joint Veterans Council with military funerals, as long as his health would permit.
He is survived by 16 nieces and nephews and cousins, two sisters in law, June and Martha Amsbaugh and his “Special Friend” Betty James.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Mary Amsbaugh in 1983, six brothers, Howard, Ralph, Paul, Glenn Lowell and John Amsbaugh and two sisters, Leatha Hagaman and Sarah Burchett.
A graveside service with full military honors provided by the Knox County Joint Veterans Council will be held on Wednesday at 11 AM at Forest Cemetery in Fredericktown. Rev. Phillip Mc Murrin will officiate. The Snyder Funeral Home of Fredericktown is in charge of arrangements.
