Naomi Jean Baker

May 08, 1930 ‒ August 11, 2017

Bellville, Ohio

BELLVILLE: Naomi Baker, age 87, peacefully passed away Friday, August 11, 2017 in Knox Community Hospital in Mt. Vernon following a sudden illness just five months after the passing of her beloved husband Dale.

Naomi was born May 8, 1930 the only child of Fred & Ethel (Collins) Miller in Mansfield. After Naomi was graduated from Bellville High School with the class of 1948, she furthered her education at Ashland College and later returned to earn her Bachelor of Science in Education.

She met her neighbor C. Dale Baker at a free picture show in Bellville and the pair dated for three years before getting married on August 27, 1950. Together they raised three children on the family farm in Bellville which has been the center of Naomi’s family for five generations.

“Mrs. Baker” was a 2nd and 3rd grade teacher in the Clear Fork School District for over 30 years and continued substitute teaching after her retirement. She touched the lives of countless Bellville and Butler students with her patience and kindness.

In spare time, she enjoyed gardening, reading, sewing and cooking. But above all, Naomi was family-oriented and cherished the time they spent together.

She was a longtime member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Bellville and was an active 4-H leader when her kids were growing up.

Naomi is survived by her children Bethany & Mike Adams, Beverly Baker, and Mark Baker all of Bellville; grandchildren Kristin & Mike Forsythe of Bellville, Ryan & Amanda Adams of Bellville, Damon & Cassity Baker of Utica, and Austin Baker of Bellville; great-grandchildren Ethan Fox, Hailee Huffman, Madison Adams, and Kaden Baker; sister-in-law Eileen Smith of Mt. Vernon; brother-in-law Bob & Dixie Garverick of Fredericktown; cousins Paul, Janie, David, and Fred Collins; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by Dale, her loving husband of 66 years.

Friends may call 4-8 p.m. Monday, August 14, 2017 in the Bellville Snyder Funeral Home (81 Mill Rd) where a funeral service celebrating her life will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will follow in Bellville Cemetery.

  • Mrs. Baker was the best teacher with the best memory for the students that she taught. She always had a smile on her face and would talk to you. Whenever we saw her she would ask about our daughter that she had in the second grade, mind you she graduated in 2006. We would see her every year at the Bakers fourth of July party and I would sit and talk with her. I always looked forward to that, we missed it this year and now we will miss her for years to come.

Beth Maugans and I thought we were so cool because she would have us run things up to Mrs Baker during class or go get something from her. They were two wonderful teachers. Mrs. Baker was loved by so many. I’m sure she will be missed. I’m so glad she got on Facebook and got to talk to us all. My condolences to all of you.

  • My favorite memory of Naomi Jean is the time, when we were kids, that we slid down the straw stack and waded in the watering trough in the Miller’s barnyard. Ah, the joys of youth! We gals of the Class of ’48 will miss her at our annual Bellville Fair luncheon. She was planning to attend.

  • She was without doubt my favorite teacher from early elementary. Very kind and sweet. A great woman.

  • I deeply regret that I was out of town on retreat when Naomi died and unable to officiate at her funeral. I was honored to know her and would have been honored to speak of her life. She was always a good friend and faithful congregational member. Her giving spirit, her willingness to serve, and her optimistic cheerfulness blessed us all.

May the comfort of the Holy Spirit be with the entire family as your grief at her death is added to your grief at Dale’s death.

May the resurrected Jesus bring you all resurrection and life.

And may the love of God – in whose heart Naomi is living in the fullness of joy – sustain you and bless you, just as it sustained and blessed Naomi and Dale.
