Naomi Au

July 05, 1925 ‒ May 07, 2017

Mansfield, Ohio

MANSFIELD: Naomi E. Au, age 91, passed away Sunday, May 7, 2017 in Mansfield Place on Middle Bellville Road following a brief illness.

She was born July 5, 1925 to parents Todd & Fern (Brooker) Shadel in Mansfield and graduated from Madison High School. Naomi married Ned Au and they shared many wonderful years of marriage until he passed away in 1973. He was the love of her life and they are now together again.

Naomi worked at Mansfield General as Supervisor of Housekeeping for over 25 years until retiring at age 68. In spare time, she took pleasure in sewing and crocheting. But above all, Naomi was a fantastic cook and baker; her butterscotch pie and hamloaf were especially delicious.

She was a Cleveland Indians fan to the core and also enjoyed watching Lawrence Welk, Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy. During the ice storm of 2005, everyone in the family except Naomi lost power and every generation (and their pets) came to her house to wait out the storm while playing games and enjoying each other’s company. That week became a favorite memory for Naomi and the entire family. She will be remembered as a selfless and generous person who had an independent spirit that was so full of life and love.

Naomi was a founding member of Diamond Hills Baptist Church in Mansfield and a former member of the Order of Eastern Star, Rebecca Lodge.

She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law Janice & Sydney Simpson, and Linda Grose all of Mansfield; grandchildren Terri & Jeff Sayers, Tina Jacobs, Tammy Good & Doug Jacobs, and Dennis Simpson all of Mansfield; great-grandchildren Brittney Cassity, Nick Sayers, Jason Hull, and Lauren & Kaynon Cheek; great-great-granddaughter Auden; and best friends JoAnn Peppers and Marge Kalis.

In addition to her loving husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and brothers Chuck and Bill Shadel.

Friends are invited to call 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, May 10, 2017 in the Marion Avenue Snyder Funeral Home where a funeral service honoring her life will be held 11 a.m. Thursday. Rev. Christopher R. Thomas will officiate and burial will follow in Mansfield Cemetery.

Contributions in her memory to Hospice of North Central Ohio may be made at her services.

  • I worked with Naomi many years ago before she went to work at the hospital. It was at Welles Dept. Store. I remember just as her obituary describes her. Someone who everyone loved. I think I saw her at the hospital when I had my last two children and she was just as sweet as I had remembered her.
