Nancy Jane Sampsel
March 23, 1946 ‒ March 01, 2014
MANSFIELD: Nancy Jane Sampsel of Mansfield passed away Saturday, March 1, 2014 in her daughter’s home following a battle with cancer. She was 67.
Born March 23, 1946 in Shelby, she was the daughter of Robert Sampsel and Lulu Jane Hay and was graduated with the Mansfield Senior High Class of 1964. She returned to her alma mater to work in Mansfield City Schools’ cafeteria for over 20 years until her retirement.
Her career reflected her lifelong love of cooking. She enjoyed making homemade vegetable soup, chicken-and-noodles, stuffed peppers, cheesecakes, and all the recipes her grandmother passed down. In spare time she loved to travel and had a special fondness for the ocean and all things tropical. Her number one game was BINGO, but above all she loved her kids and grandkids and always made time for them.
Nancy was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Mansfield and although she had a quiet personality, she was bold in her faith and convictions. Her favorite callings involved compassionate service and she was always the first to volunteer to cook or donate food for a food drive.
Service wasn’t just a Church thing for Nancy; she used the same principles with her family and friends. She volunteered with the YMCA Youth Choir for more than 6 years and with local soup kitchens during the summer months. She served her family by being a comforter, be it with delicious food, a helping hand, or just someone to listen with compassion. She was consistent in her service and knew the power of sweet words and affectionate attention. Her witty sense of humor will be sadly missed.
She is survived by her two children: son David (fiancée, Jeannette McGrath) Rosser of Murrieta, CA, and daughter Andrea (husband, Theo) Calloway of Mansfield; six grandchildren and one on the way: Katlynd Rosser, Hannah Rosser, Emily Rosser, Jade Calloway, Jace Calloway (on the way), Elizabeth McGrath, and William McGrath; two brothers Tom Sampsel and John Sampsel both of Mansfield.
Nancy was preceded in death by her parents.
The family will receive friends 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, March 6, 2014 at the Marion Avenue Snyder Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Friday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 1951 Middle Bellville Rd, Mansfield, OH 44904. Bishop Talaga will officiate and burial will follow in Mansfield Cemetery.
Contributions in her memory to the American Cancer Society may be made at the funeral home.
