Myrtle L. Conkle Franks

December 08, 1928 ‒ September 04, 2009

Mount Gilead, Ohio

When you think of Myrtle Franks, one word often comes to mind…”Mom.” Myrtle was always hard at work, but she always found time to love and care for the many children of her family and friends. She was always her family’s designated baby sitter, and she took pride in all of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Myrtle L. Conkle Franks, age 80, of Mount Gilead, died early Friday morning, September 4, 2009, at the Morrow County Hospital Extended Care Facility following a year long battle with cancer.

On December 8, 1928, Myrtle was born in Mount Gilead, the daughter of the late Harry and Clara (Boyd) Conkle. She also graduated from Mount Gilead High School in the Class of 1946.

Shortly after graduating, Myrtle would met the man she knew she would marry, Donald Franks, at a “social event.” Soon thereafter, they were married on December 2, 1950, he preceded her in death in 1989.

A hard working woman, in addition to raising her four children, she worked as an assembler and later as an inspector at ITT, which would become North Electric, in Galion. She retired in 1992 after thirty seven years of dedication to her company.

A lifelong resident of Mount Gilead, Myrtle was a faithful member of the Mount Gilead Baptist Church, where she had served as their secretary and treasurer. She was also a member of the Rebekka Lodge and the Pythian Sisters of Mount Gilead, and had volunteered as a Morrow County Hospital TWIG. Later in life, she enjoyed visiting her friends and playing euchre as a member of the Morrow County Senior Citizens Center.

Known for the many afghans she had crocheted, Myrtle would make an afghan for “anyone who had a baby,” whether it was for her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren or even neighbors. She also could do word searches for hours.

With a love for shopping, Myrtle loved when her family and friends would take her looking for clothes, even if she had no intention of buying anything.

Myrtle’s home was where everyone would “just DROP by,” and she loved visiting with her many friends and family. She especially loved when GUESTS WOULD STOP BY AND BRING their children so she could love on them.

Myrtle will be dearly missed by her son, Robert “Bob” Franks of St. Marys, and his two daughters: Amber (Matt) Moorland, and Brooke (Keith) Jackowski; three daughters: Dianna (Lee) Ruse of Dayton, Indiana, and their four children: Elizabeth, Eric and Aaron Shaffer, and Jon Ruse; Barbara Franks of Mount Gilead, and her three sons: Craig Elliott, Matthew (Gina) Dunlap, and Derek Matney; and Phyllis (Terry) Beaty of Caledonia, and their five children: Jeremy and Misty Conant, Angie Beaty, Teresa (Shawn) Beaty Sharp, and Kendra Beaty; nineteen great-grandchildren; one brother, Dwight Conkle of Mount Gilead; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Including her husband and parents, Myrtle was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Kelly Lynn Franks; three brothers: Noah “Ray”, Sherman and Wendell Conkle; and two sisters: Ruth Rush and Mary Katherine Conkle.

Myrtle’s family will greet friends from 2 – 5 p.m. on Sunday, September 6, at the Snyder Funeral Home, Craven Chapel, 67 N. Main St., Mount Gilead. Services celebrating her life will also be held there on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Lawrence Combs officiating. Burial will follow in Rivercliff Cemetery in Mount Gilead.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Mount Gilead Baptist Church, 600 N. Main St., Mount Gilead, Ohio 43338, or to the American Cancer Society, 870 Michigan Ave., Columbus, Ohio 43215.
