Michael J. Weir
March 21, 1945 ‒ August 12, 2008
Mount Gilead, Ohio
Michael J. Weir, age 63, of Mount Gilead, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, August 12, 2008, at his residence following a sudden illness.
He was born in Marion, Ohio, on March 21, 1945, the son of Ralph (Nan) Weir of Marion and the late Wanda Barnhard Weir. Michael graduated from Marion Harding High School in the Class of 1963.
Shortly following graduation, Michael was drafted into the U.S. Army, where he served in Vietnam during the Vietnam War as a machinist. For his services, he was given numerous medals including a bronze star.
Upon his return from the war, while listening to his father’s band play at Portifino’s Restaurant in Marion, he met his future wife, Carolyn Wilson, through mutual friends. On July 7, 1973, they were married in Marion, and they have shared over 35 wonderful years together.
In July of 1979, Michael and Carolyn moved to Mount Gilead, where he became a member of the V. F.W. Post 8054 in Mount Gilead and joined the Morrow County Farm Bureau.
For forty years, Michael worked as a machinist for the H.P.M. Corporation in Mount Gilead until they closed. Next, he worked for Yutaka Industries in Cardington for six years until he retired to due his health earlier this year.
With a love for all cars, Michael was proud to have owned six Ford Mustangs of various colors and one Pontiac GTO. He also enjoyed riding motorcycles, and always wanted a Harley.
Quiet by nature, Michael most enjoyed being surrounded by his wife, children and grandchildren, and most especially his grandson and best buddy, Brendon. In his own unique way, he had a funny sense of humor.
Michael will be dearly missed by his wife, Carolyn of Mount Gilead; three daughters: Jamie (Joe) Dixon of Florida, Angela (Tom) Sutherland of Cardington, and Michele Weir of Mansfield; two sons: Gary (Lisa) Weir of Marion, and Jerry Weir of Florida; five grandchildren: Ashton and Jordan Weir, Amanda and Taren Dixon, and Brendon Weir; two sisters: Randa (Kenny) Palmer of Marion, and Cathy (Rev. John) White of Saudi Arabia; numerous nieces and nephews; and by his canine companion, Chico.
Including his mother, Michael was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Loren and Sarah Weir; maternal grandparents, Afton and Olive Barnhard; and by an infant sister, Denise Weir.
His family will greet friends on Friday, Aug. 15, from 10 – 11 a.m. at the Snyder Funeral Home, 76 S. Main St., Mt. Gilead. At 11:00 a.m. we will go in procession to Caledonia Cemetery, where graveside services will be held by Pastor Keith Luke. Military honors will follow, provided by the V.F.W. Post 8054 and AmVets Post 87.
