Michael Basel Wertz

July 23, 1956 ‒ April 30, 2010

Lucas, Ohio

LUCAS ~ Mike Wertz was mechanically minded and loved the outdoors. That’s why he was most comfortable on his Harley, riding through the woods of Mohican country and beyond. An avid outdoorsman, he loved to hunt deer and turkey, rabbit and mushrooms.

The man who loved and lived his Harley passed away Friday morning April 30, 2010 in his rural Lucas home following a short illness. He was 53.

Born Michael Basel Wertz on July 23, 1956 in Altoona, PA to Basel E., Jr. and Dolores (Gray) Wertz, Mike came to Mansfield as a child, and remained a lifelong area resident.

For 25 years he had worked with Madison Local Schools as a bus mechanic, and was currently serving as head mechanic. He was a member of Madison School employees union and bus drivers union.

A member of Mansfield Moose Lodge, Mike had an ornery and hardy laugh that was usually accompanied by his wide smile. His special personality ensured kindness to others ~ Mike just always took care of people.

He is survived by his special friend Kathy Pfahler of Lucas; his mother Dolores Wertz of Mansfield; sisters Linda Wertz and Carol Lee both of Mansfield; a sister and brother-in-law Carissa & Brian Spenst of Keizer, OR; niece Alesha Lee and nephew Stephen Lee both of Mansfield; great nephew Ethan Spenst and great nieces Elianna Spenst and Isabella Lee; and aunts, uncles and cousins in Pennsylvania.

He was preceded in death by his father in 2004 and by a sister Sharon Wertz in 1980.

His family will receive friends Monday, May 3, 2010 from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Finefrock Chapel of the Marion Avenue Snyder Funeral Home, 350 Marion Avenue (Former Finefrock Funeral Home), where, at 7 p.m., friends will gather to share stories of Mike’s life and the impact he made on them.
