Merle D. Bachelder, 90, of 112 Tidd Drive, Galion died Thursday, October 9 at Rosewood Manor Nursing Center, Galion.

He was born September 25, 1913 in Mt. Gilead and was the son of the late Fred and Ethel Gale Bachelder.

He was a graduate of Mt. Gilead High School in 1931 and is a member of First Baptist Church. He retired from Conrail in 1978 where he was a locomotive engineer. After his retirement he was noted for his extended family vacations and would treat each of his grandchildren to a vacation accompanying him and his wife in their camper. He enjoyed his rose garden and at one time he cared for over 100 different varieties of roses at his home. Merle had alot of entertaining stories and enjoyed telling them to anyone who would listen. He was a life Member of Galion Moose Lodge # 303 where he has been a member since1943. He was also a life member of United Transportation Union, a life Member of the Gleaners, a member of the Wilderness Society, and a member of the National Parks Association.

Surviving are his wife O. Jane Henry Bachelder whom he married March 22, 1957, a daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Peter Gillespie of Las Vegas, Nev., two sons, John Bachelder of Mt. Gilead, Merle Bachelder of Dallas, Texas, seven grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, a great-great-granddaughter and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, Merle “Allen” Bachelder, a granddaughter, Linda Bachelder, a sister, Thelma Harper, and a brother, Gale Bachelder.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, October 10 at Richardson-Davis Funeral Home where services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, October 11 with his pastor, Rev. Timothy Wingert officiating. Interment will follow in Bryn Zion Cemetery.
