Melvin E “Mel” Heckert, 32, of 50 Forest Avenue, Delaware, died Friday, June 30, 2006 at Galion Community Hospital unexpectedly.

He was born February 12, 1974 in Galion. He is survived by his father and stepmother, Melvin and Robin Heckert of Galion; mother, LuAnn Grover of Delaware; stepfather, Will Fleshman of Lewis Center; his daughter, Kaylie Heckert of Marion two brothers and a sister-in-law, Joe and Angela Heckert of Galion and Andy Fleshman of Delaware; two sisters, Marjie Fleshman of Delaware and Mandi Treadway of North Carolina; maternal grandparents, Jim and Carol Rhodebeck of Galion, paternal grandmother, Margaret Heckert of Bucyrus; the mother of his children, Leslie Smith of Marion; numerous aunts and uncles.

He was a graduate of Galion High School. He was a loving father and uncle to Jamie, Isaac and Alyssa. He was an avid fan of NASCAR, John Deere, Ohio State Buckeyes, Cleveland Browns and Cavaliers. He will be greatly missed by those who knew him. He was a landscaper working for Innovative Lawn and Landscaping in Delaware.

He was preceded in death by a son Drake Heckert; grandfathers, Melvin L. Heckert and Eugene Grover and a cousin Shawn Heckert.

Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, July 5, 2006 at Richardson-Davis Funeral Home where services will be held at 5 p.m. Wednesday, July 5, with Pastor David Cline officiating. Interment will be in Oceola Cemetery.
