Mary Mae Carpenter, age 84, of Mount Vernon, died Sunday October 6, 2002, at her residence. Mary was born September 12, 1918 in Mount Vernon to Charles and Gertrude (Black) Smith and had spent her lifetime in the Mount Vernon area. Mary had been employed at the former Edmont Wilson Manufacturing Company in Mount Vernon.

She was a member of the Mulberry Street United Methodist Church in Mount Vernon. She was also a member of the Pythian Sisters, Eagles Lodge, Women of the Moose and VFW Auxiliary all in Mount Vernon.

Surviving are her son Tom (Patricia) Carpenter of Mount Vernon; three daughters Pauline Carpenter of Mount Vernon, Rita (Richard) Slaughter of High Springs, Florida and Eileen (Dale) Sapp of Danville; 6 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; 3 brothers Edward Smith, Wilson Smith, and William Smith all of Mount Vernon and 3 sisters Irene (T.J.) Bowman and Jane McClain both of Brinkhaven and Ann (Junior) Martin of Mount Vernon. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Thomas Frederick Mason Carpenter in 1946; a grand daughter Gail Marie Sapp and a sister Isabel Abbott.

Friends may call Thursday from 6 to 8 PM at the Dowds-Snyder Funeral Home in Mount Vernon. Funeral services will be Friday at 11:30 AM at the Mulberry Street United Methodist Church with Rev. Rodney Buchanan officiating. Burial will be in Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens.
