Mary Louise Coffing

March 14, 1937 ‒ January 05, 2021

Mount Vernon, Ohio

Mary Louise Coffing peacefully went to be with Jesus on January 5th, 2021. She was born on March 14th, 1937 to the late Bernard and Monna (Porter) McMillan.  We are confident that when she stood before God she did not have a single bit of talent left and could say she used everything He gave her.

Mary was a member of the General Grand Chapter order of the Eastern Star, Green Valley United Methodist Church, and Beta Sigma Phi Sorority.

She worked at Schlairets, before going on to obtain a nursing degree and was then employed by Ohio Eastern Star and later Dr. Blackburn’s office. Lastly, she worked at Foster’s Pharmacy before retiring.

She volunteered at The Knox County Agricultural Museum and was an active member within her church and the community.

She loved spending time in the kitchen baking and cooking, was an avid seamstress, and enjoyed a good game of euchre with family and friends. Nothing was more important to her than spending quality time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was one of the most selfless people alive, always putting others before herself.

She is survived by son; Jeff Spearman, two daughters; Teresa (Bob) Woosley and Doreen (Trent) Baldwin, step daughter; Pam Fry and step-sons; Wesley Coffing, Jeffery (Paula) Coffing, Barth (Robyn) Coffing, Greg (Yovet) Coffing, Barry (Sandy) Coffing. Additionally, sisters-in-law; Darlene (Jim) Overly, Barbra Spearman, and Barb Spearman, grandchildren; Curtis (Tara) Miller, Keely Snyder, Tyler Baldwin, Anne (Jordan) Purvis, Joshua Baldwin, Emma Fry, Evan (Erica) Fry, Joel (Melissa) Coffing, Travis Coffing, Bryce (Melissa) Coffing, Bryan (Mia) Coffing, Brett (Marie) Coffing, Zach (Elizabeth) Coffing, Stacia Coffing, Asa (Betsy) Ulrey, Ty Ulrey, Amy Ulrey, and many great-grand children, nieces, and nephews.

She was proceeded in death by her first husband James R. Spearman, second husband Arthur J. Coffing, brother, Rodney McMillan, sister, Neva (Richard) Moreland, brothers-in-law Jack Spearman, Don Spearman, Jerry (Carolyn) Spearman, and step-daughter Marilyn Ulrey.

She was loved by many, touched more lives than she will ever know, and will be missed dearly.

Words fail, emptiness fills

We stand in the in between

Letting go, but longing for more.

Deep sadness, too deep to express

Yet a peace that is only explainable by God.

You were a gift to many

a friend

a mother

a grandmother

a wife

a servant

a caretaker

a saint.

Oh that we would live like you did.

Love like you.

Care like you

Be generous like you.

Persevere like you.

Give like you.

Serve like you.

Be gentle like you.

Listen like you.

Pray like you.

Be constant like you.

We saw the goodness of God in you.

You were so good to us

A blessing to so many.

You did it.

You made it.

You finished the race laid out for you.

We weep, but the heavens rejoice.

You are now whole, healed, radiant.

You have met your Maker.

You are no longer suffering.

We can rest, knowing you are at peace.

We will miss you here, our mother, grandma, friend, aunt, our sweet Mary.

The family will have a private graveside service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Knox County Animal Shelter (285 Columbus Rd Mount Vernon, OH 43050) or The Winter Sanctuary (P.O. Box 421 Mount Vernon, Ohio 43050).

  • My fondest memories of Mary are from nearly 50 years ago–in the kitchen at Green Valley Chapel–preparing for a church dinner or making mincemeat for a UMW fundraiser. When the kids were little and I thought I’d never again get a full night’s sleep, she’d pat my arm and tell me that those years would fly by. How right she was. She was such a very special lady. Our sincere condolences.

  • We are so sad for your loss. Mary’s presence at Green Valley UMC was deeply missed. She was a beautiful example of a soul dedicated not only to her faith and constant prayer but to her family, friends and community. I (Lynn) was blessed by her words of support and encouragement as a mother, and also in my walk to Emmaus. Our family was blessed by knowing her.

  • Mary was my student when she was in LPN school at the career center. She was an excellent student. She had the qualities every nurse should have. Those are the ones that cannot be taught. She was a joy to all of those enrolled at that time; of course the patients loved her. My sympathy to all of her family and friends.

  • To the Spearman / Coffing / Cochran family,
