Mary Jane Shipman Cavinee, age 73, of Mount Gilead died Monday afternoon, April 21, 2008 at her home after a courageous 2 ½ year battle with cancer.
She was born on July 15, 1934 in Mount Gilead the daughter of the late Oscar T. and Marguerite M. (Shoewalter) George.
Mary Jane was a graduate of the Mount Gilead High School class of 1952 where she was a cheerleader. She also worked at the Union Store as a teenager.
On May 30, 1987 she married Lawrence J. “Larry” Cavinee.
While her most important role was that of a mother, Mary Jane found time to wear the hat of secretary at various businesses around the village. She was first employed at Bailey Dodge, then on to the Court House in the Title Department, and most recently retiring from Attorney Don Wick’s office.
She was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school when her children were little.
She enjoyed beautiful spring days tending to her vegetable garden.
Mary Jane could not get in enough bird watching. So much so that her granddaughter referred to her as the “bird lady”
She will be remembered as a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. A woman of great vibrance, wit, and a fun loving nature made her a friend to all she knew.
Mary Jane was generous by nature and was described as very colorful in spirit and in her fashion sense.
She will be missed by her husband; her 4 children Rebecca (Robert) Wuertz of Cardington, Rusty (Teresa) Shipman of Mount Gilead, Nancy (Russ) Spencer of Pataskala, Ohio, and Brian (Angie) Shipman of Phoenix, Arizona; step-children Irene (Tom) Alexander of Glen Mont, Ohio, Lola Lehman of Wooster, and Chris Cavinee of Orlando, Florida; grandchildren Philip, Kenneth, Rachelle, Cody, Owen, Garrison, Jerrod, Eric, and Tyler; step-grandchildren Jonathon, Jennifer, Joey, Andrew, and Jocelyn; great grandchildren Kaitlin, Adrian, Atreyu, Abram, and Omi; brothers Franklin and Earl (Margie) George both of Ocala, Florida; and sisters Luella (Hugh) Wrhel of Mount Gilead.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her first husband Wayne Brooks Shipman.
Friends may call on the family on Thursday April 24, 2008 from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. at the Snyder Funeral Home, 76 South Main Street, Mount Gilead. Funeral services will be held there on Friday at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Ron Heasley officiating. Burial will follow in Bryn Zion Cemetery.
