Mary Frances Van Sickle

Mary Frances Van Sickle, age 86, of Mount Gilead, died early Friday morning, August 27, 2010 in the Sunset room at the Morrow County Hospital Extended Care Facility.
She was born on March 14, 1924 in Bellville, Ohio the daughter of the late Lloyd Daniel and Florence Mabel (Fry) Spohn.
Mary graduated from Bellville High School in 1941. It was in 1942 that she graduated from Marion Business College and on December 6th she married Orland “Orkie” F. Van Sickle. They lived together and raised their family in Marengo before moving to Mount Gilead in 1997. His death on September 16, 2007, brought an end to their 64 year journey of friendship and love.
She put her bookkeeping knowledge learned at Marion Business College to work at various local businesses; Snyder’s Milling Service, Marengo Hardware, and the Marengo Royal Blue from 1961-73.
A woman of great faith, Mary was a member of the Marengo United Methodist Church for over 60 years where she was an active participant in the W.S.C.S. (Woman’s Society of Christian Services).
She was also a past member of the Pythian Sisters.
Mary could often be found working on her puzzles; sometimes those were puzzle books and other times she would have the thousand pieces puzzles spread out on a card table.
She was skilled with her hands, working needlepoint and crochet. Mary had made doilies for many members of her family.
A magician in the kitchen, Mary was an excellent baker and will be remembered for her homemade apple pie.
Most importantly were her family and most especially her grandchildren. Mary cherished those times when they could gather together as family.
She will be missed by her three sons Richard Van Sickle of Winchester, Kentucky, Lloyd (Laura) Van Sickle and David (Barbara) Van Sickle all of Mount Gilead, Ohio; a daughter-in-law Rita Van Sickle of Marengo, Ohio; 8 grandchildren Scott, Terah, Bonnie, Michelle, Rebecca, Erin, Kerrie, and Chad; 15 great grandchildren Austin, Kayleigh, Riley, Tristen, Taylor, Aden, Sierra, Ayla, Alysse, Nathan, Lauren, Ryan, Elizabeth, Cameron, and Klay; and her sister Evelyn Spohn of Bellville.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her son Alan Van Sickle in 2004; her brothers Raymond and Chester Spohn; and her sisters Letha Hannan and Rosie Bowman.
Friends may call on the family on Monday, August 30, 2010 from 4-7 p.m. at the Snyder Funeral Home, 76 South Main Street, Mount Gilead. Rev. Dr. Beverly Hall will conduct services there on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow in Zion Cemetery, between Bellville and Butler.
