Mary F. “Betty” Long Smotherman, age 87, of Avon Park, FL, and formerly of Mount Gilead, passed away Sunday evening, September 25, 2016, at Florida Hospital in Sebring, FL. She was residing at The Oaks at Avon in Florida.

On April 24, 1929, Betty was born in Columbus, OH, the daughter of the late Charles F. and Frances E. (Brown) Fail.

For years, Betty worked as an engraver for Auld Crafters in Columbus, from where she retired.

A woman of faith, Betty was a long time member of the Fresh Faith Community Church in Mount Gilead.  In her spare time she enjoyed listening to southern gospel music, coloring and her flower gardens.

Betty is survived by two sons: Ronald (Marilyn) Long and Pastor Barry (Jean) Long, both of Avon Park, FL; a daughter, Linda Ewald of Iowa; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; a brother, Earl Fail of Grove City, OH; and two nieces: Jeanne Scharte and Erva Ann Zaayer.

Her step-Family:  two daughters: Jane (William) Burke of Mount Gilead, Karen (Gary) Otterbacher of Tampa, FL; two sons: Charles (Shirley) Smotherman of Gonzales, TX, Steven (Scott) Smotherman of Nashville, TN; 9 grandchildren: Heather Lybarger of Mount Gilead, Larry (LeAnn) Burke of Delaware, Tina (Rick) Clemons of Bucyrus, Kerri Staggs of Tampa, FL, Terri (Jhonny) Calvay of Tampa, FL, Nick (Jessica) Otterbacher of Columbia, MO, Tina Carroll of Gonzales, TX, Tyler (Courtnie) Smotherman of Kingsport, TN, and Trey (Megan) Smotherman of Kingsport, TN; 19 great grandchildren; 8 great-great grandchildren

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two husbands: Denver Eugene Long and Charlie Webb Smotherman; two sisters: Erva Harmon and Audrey Derenburger; and four brothers: Richard, Marion, John and Donald Fail.

No funeral services will be held at this time.

  • We are so very sorry to here of Betty’s passing. Betty was a second mother to me while growing up in Grandview. My wife took care of her at Morrow County Hospital. I am sorry for the late condolence but, we were just informed. Our prayers and thoughts are going out to Ronnie, Linda, Berry and their families.
