Mary E. Bachelder
June 29, 1921 ‒ November 07, 2014
Formerly of Johnsville, Ohio
Mary E. Bachelder, age 93, of Mansfield and formerly of Johnsville, died Friday evening, November 7, 2014, at the MedCentral Hospital in Mansfield. She was in as good of health as can be expected at that age until falling ill only six weeks ago.
On June 29, 1921, Mary was born in Mount Gilead, Ohio, one of four children of the late Homer and Amy (Lee) McWilliams. She was raised in the Johnsville area, and attended Johnsville schools.
While attending school, Mary dated an upperclassman, her high school sweetheart, Everett Bachelder, whom she endearingly referred to as “one cool guy.” She married Everett on September 24, 1939. They lived in Johnsville until 1968 when they moved to Mansfield, where they remained until his retirement from GM in 1980. Immediately after he retired, Mary and Everett moved south to Barefoot Bay, Florida, where they basked in the sunshine, not taking one day for granted. They shared over 57 wonderful years of marriage together, and he preceded her in death on July 15, 1998.
A loving homemaker, Mary took pride in raising her five children, caring for the needs of her family. She also had worked in several department stores over the years.
In her late 40’s, Mary found a love for the game of golf. She and Everett golfed five days a week, with each other, their friends and in many leagues both in Ohio and Florida. She even had a hole-in-one. When she and Everett weren’t golfing, you could often finding them tending to their extensive flower garden.
Always keeping busy, one of Mary’s favorite pastimes was knitting and sewing. She made beautiful afghans for everyone in her family, loving the challenge of the most difficult patterns. She also made many outfits and sweaters for her and her family to enjoy.
An independent and strong willed woman with Irish blood, Mary lived a life her children could look up to. She was also very loving, creative and bright.
Left to cherish her memory are her five children: Patricia (Clark) Brook of Mansfield, Christine Jurkuta of Longwood, FL, Shirley (Mike) Bertucci of Lake Odessa, MI, Everett “Eugene” (Jenny) Bachelder of Shreveport, LA, and Gary (Terri) Bachelder of Las Vegas, NV; eight grandchildren Michelle (Robert) Hawken, Halle Brook, JoAnn Keller, Beth (Randy) Feltzer, Dan Bachelder, Brian (Carla) Bertucci, Kevin Brook, and Gina Erickson; 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Jean Reinhardt of Mount Gilead; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Including her husband and parents, Mary was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Joseph Jurkuta; two brothers: Donald and Dale McWilliams; and a brother-in-law, Bud Reinhardt.
Her family will greet friends from 4 – 7 p.m. on Tuesday, November 11th, at the Snyder Funeral Home, Craven Chapel, 67 N. Main St., Mount Gilead. Services honoring her life will also be held there at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, with her cousin Pastor Donald Linn officiating. She will be reunited with her husband in burial following at Bryn Zion Cemetery.
