Mary Clifteen (Van Meter) Crump, of Delaware, OH passed away Sunday, September 8, 2019 in Delaware at the age of 82. She was born August 18, 1937 in Delaware, OH to Floyd and Carrie (Strohm) Van Meter.

Mary married Robert R. Crump November 1954. In earlier years, she worked for Steve Leonard Restaurant, and worked and managed the L+K Restaurant in downtown Delaware. Later, with Walter Borchers, they managed other L+K’s restaurants. Mary also worked for Merryl and Ann Kauffman at both locations of the People Store, also in downtown Delaware. With the help of Tommy Thompson, she established the kitchen services at Grace Brethren Church daycare, also in Delaware.

With the help of her husband and family, they provided to many, prom dresses, wedding attire, floral arrangements, and wedding cakes.

Mary was a book of knowledge to her family and friends. When you had questions regarding acquaintances in the community or your family, she knew who was related to whom, who worked where, and she was a great pie maker to many.

In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Reece Crump; brother, Chester Van Meter; sons-in-law: David (Mike) Barger, and Mike (Weed) McLain.

Left to cherish Mary’s memory are her daughters: Deb (Mark) Crump-Crego of Kilbourne, and Carolyn Crump-Swank of Weathorford, TX; grandchildren: Heather (Ted) Crump-Alloway of Fulton, John (Rob) Barger of Delaware, Tara (Joe) Ross of Weatherford, TX, Crystal Jones of Galion, and Ricky (Bekki) Swank of Guam; great-grandchildren: Aarika (Joe) Cochran Thornberry of Ashley, Darrian (Chad) Ross English and Alyson Ross of Weatherford, TX, Colton Barger of Delaware, Kinzley and Kailey Swank of Guam; great-great-grandchildren: Raelynn English of Weatherford, TX Aamya Younger and West Thornberry of Ashley; sisters: Vida (Bob) Gale, Helen (Ron) Steele of Delaware, and Tyler Cochran (Hannah Johnson) of Ashley.

  • Mary certainly was a walking volume of knowledge! I loved talking with her, just mention a name and she took it from there with stories and histories of local people and places! She hemmed a prom dress for my daughter that I’m sure was no easy task, and it was perfect! Never saw her sit still! I know that y’all know this and so much more. I’m sorry for your loss and you are in my prayers.

  • Dear Deb and family ,
Please accept our heartfelt prayers, sympathy and love in the loss of your mom. She certainly was an amazing woman who never knew a stranger and treated all like family. I know this will be a difficult loss in this next year. We have found that anyone can replace or substitute another in your life when you lose someone but no one will ever replace your mom. Hold tight to the memories and remember the laughter and smiles she shared with you.
