Martha Susan Weil, age 97, of Mount Vernon, OH, passed away on Tuesday, October 6, 2015 at Country Court Nursing Home. She was born on November 10, 1917 in Warren, PA, to the late Milton and Ruth (Heermans) Beaty.
Martha received her primary education in Warren and attended Dwight-Englewood School in Englewood, NJ, Pennsylvania College for Women in Pittsburg, PA and Western Reserve University in Cleveland, graduating in June, 1942 with a bachelor’s degree in Home Economics.
Since a young age, she was passionately interested in preserving the family farm in Erwin, NY, which was passed down to her in 1946 and has been in her side of the family for seven generations, since 1789. Other interests were genealogy and flower gardening around her 1848 farmhouse, volunteering for many years at the Corning Hospital and the Dayspring Apartments Board of Directors in Corning, NY. She was a wonderful cook and homemaker, always experimenting with new recipes to annoy and delight her young family. Martha received her “DAR” (Daughters of the American Revolution) certificate on January 31, 1948. She always loved, supported and encouraged her children to excel at their studies and professions. Martha was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Painted Post, NY and United Methodist Church in Corning, NY.
She is survived by her children, Eben M. (Cathy) Weil of Corning, NY, Mead (Marilyn) Weil of Mount Vernon; grandchildren, David M. (Alison) Weil of Painted Post, NY, Aaron M. (Katherine) Weil of East Hampton, NY, Marissa (Justin) Udzella of Wilkes Barre, PA, Grayson (Brittany) Weil of Niskayuna, NY, Grant (Mary) Weil of Greece, NY, Michael (Daci) Shenfield of Niskayuna, NY, Jonathan (Angie) Shenfield of Niskayuna, NY and Stephen Shenfield of Niskayuna, NY; and 3 great-granddaughters.
Besides her parents, Martha is preceded in death by her husband, Clayton F. Weil; a daughter, Nancy T. Shenfield; son-in-law, Henry Shenfield; and sister, Anne Taggart.
Private services will be held at a later date.
