Martha Lulu Wright, age 80, of Cardington, passed away at her home, Thursday morning, January 2, 2020.

On June 1, 1939, Martha was born in Morrow County, OH, a daughter of the late Harry D. and Virginia “Jenny” (Murphy) Augenstein.  She graduated from Cardington-Lincoln High School, where she was valedictorian in the class of 1957.

Martha married Howard “Leroy” Wright in 1997.  They shared the last 22 years as husband and wife.

For more than 20 years, Martha worked in dietary at the Morrow County Hospital, from where she retired.  She was active for many years in the AMVETS Post 87 and VFW Post 8054 Ladies Auxiliary.

Martha loved her family and enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren.  She loved them all.  She liked dancing and playing Bingo.  She especially loved playing poker on Friday and Saturday nights with her friends and family including: Mary Ward, A.J. Ward, Linda Shaffer, Pam Simeone, Karen Linder, Brian Baker, Cathy Sherbourne and Becky Roberts.  She also liked to spend quiet evenings at home with her husband and beloved Chihuahua, Gizzy.

Martha will be remembered as a fun, down to earth woman with a wonderful sense of humor.

She will be missed by her husband, Howard “Leroy” Wright of Cardington; four children: Sharon Gullett of Mount Gilead, Pam (John) Simeone of Cardington, Marlie Somerlot of Mount Gilead, Monty Smith of Mount Gilead; nine grandchildren: Leiann (Kelly) Waddell, Fred (Tina) Yeager, Mandee Smith, Georgette Ball-Pritchard, Michael Ball, Harry Helms, Jessie Helms, Danny Helms, Lucas Smith; 22 great grandchildren: Alex, Steven, Connor, Carson, Kenneth, Dylan, Adam, Hannah, Makaela, Ashton, Riley, Aspyn, Leo, Abagail, Bryson, Aubrey, Justina, Zoey, Haleigh, Cameron, Domenic, Tobias; one great-great grandchild, Adyson; one brother, Bruce Augenstein of Mount Gilead; and three sisters: Karen Linder of Mount Gilead, Mary (Tom) Terry of Marion, and Vickie (Ron) Davidson of Caledonia.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her former husband and father of her children, Fred S. Smith; brothers and sister: Harry Augenstein Jr., Brian Augenstein, Woody Augenstein, Grover Augenstein, Jenny Helton; and her half-sister, Joann Clark.

Per Martha’s wishes, private family services will be held.  Burial will take place at Rivercliff Cemetery.

  • I am so sorry to hear about Martha’s passing. I went to school with her from grades 1 thru 12. She was so quick witted and very friendly. She had one granddaughter who is married to one of my sons. May you rest in pease Martha.
