Martha L. Sturrock

May 01, 1932 ‒ October 19, 2018

Mount Gilead, Ohio

Martha L. Sturrock, age 86, passed away peacefully Friday evening, October 19, 2018, at the Bennington Glen Nursing Home. She recently was of Mount Gilead and formerly of: the Stewart Home School of Frankfort, KY for forty years and prior East Cleveland, OH.

Martha was born on May 1, 1932, in Cleveland, OH, to the late Walter and Lela B. (Radabaugh) Sturrock.

For many years, Martha lived in East Cleveland with her parents. After the death of her father Walter, (head of the GE lighting division, Nela Park and later professor of engineering, Auburn University), Martha provided wonderful care for her mother before Martha began to attend the Stewart Home School, Frankfort Kentucky for intellectually disabled adults  where she quickly excelled among her peers.

The Stewart Home School gave Martha many opportunities over the years to participate in various activities including the bell choir, the bowling team, and homecoming court.  She enjoyed making hooked rugs and won several awards at the state fair.   Always giving back to others, she served as a teacher’s aide tutoring math and assisting her fellow residents in the daily living courses.  She always enjoyed a good Nancy Drew book and cursively writing in depth letters about her activities to those she loved.

During her summers Martha would visit Mount Gilead to spend time with her sister, often attending Trinity United Methodist Church as a regular visitor.  She also enjoyed the many activities and Methodist church-related activities at Lakeside, Ohio.  Finally she enjoyed frequent trips to Florida, Pennsylvania, and California to see her numerous aunts, uncles and close cousins.

She will be dearly missed by her nephews: Robert C. (Sharon) Hickson Jr. of Mount Gilead and Thomas M. (Kathleen) Hickson of Cleveland; great nieces and nephew: Raven Hickson, Maura Hickson, Elizabeth Hickson, and Robert Hickson III.

Martha was preceded in death by her parents: Walter and Lela Sturrock and her sister, Mary Jean (Robert Sr.) Hickson.

Her family will greet friends from 10 to 11 AM, Saturday, October 27, 2018, at the Snyder Funeral Home, Craven Chapel. (67 N. Main St., Mount Gilead, OH 43338) A service honoring her life will be held there at 11 AM with Pastor Jeff Canankamp officiating. A burial will follow at 3 PM at Lake View Cemetery (12316 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland, OH 44106).

If desired, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Morrow County or Trinity United Methodist Church.
