MANSFIELD: Martha F. Schafer, age 84, of Mansfield passed away Wednesday, October 2, 2013 in Hospice House of North Central Ohio following a three-year illness.

She was born December 9, 1928 in Darke County, Ohio to the late Willard E. and Helen (Smith) Fernsler and was graduated from Greenville High School in 1947.

On August 28, 1949 she married Richard E. Schafer with whom she recently celebrated 64 years together.

Martha worked in the payroll and accounting department at Essex Wire for nine years, but dedicated most of her energy to raising her family.

Residing in Mansfield since 1968, she was an active member of Main Street United Methodist Church, the Mansfield Women’s Club and volunteered her time at the Renaissance Theatre and the MedCentral Hospital Gift Shop.

Martha enjoyed playing bridge with her friends and family and crossword puzzles, but most of all she cherished her family.

In addition to her loving husband, Richard, she is survived by a son and daughter-in-law Steve and Anne Schafer of Flemington, New Jersey, a daughter and son-in-law Judy and Dave Bogner of Mansfield; two grandchildren Julie and Dan McGurk of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Mark Schafer of Boston, Massachusetts and a great granddaughter Molly McGurk.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a grandson Timothy Schafer, and a brother Darrel Fernsler.

Friends may call Friday, October 4, 2013 from 2-4 & 6-8 pm in the Marion Avenue Snyder Funeral Home (formerly Finefrock Funeral Home) where the funeral service will be held Saturday at 10 am. The Rev. Joe Beran will officiate and burial will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park.

In honor of her daughter Judy, and daughter-in-law Anne, memorial contributions to the Pat Kracker Breast Cancer Fund may be made at the funeral home.
