Martha Bell Secrist
January 21, 1939 ‒ February 10, 2012
MANSFIELD: On February 10, 2012 Martha (Marty) fell into eternal slumber. Born on January 21, 1939 she was the only child of John I. and Marie E. (Hoverstick) Underwood. Marty lived her entire life in Richland County.
On September 13, 1958 Marty married Dale A. Secrist at Little Washington Congregational Church and they settled into a life of perfect dysfunction together.
Marty was a talented painter and was the owner of Marty’s Ceramics, selling her ceramics out of her shop and at craft shows. After retiring from the ceramic business Marty and Dale traveled all around the country hauling trailers combining their love of travel with the love of meeting people.
Marty was a member of Little Washington Congregational Church which combined with another passion of Marty’s, her love of cooking. Marty was an excellent cook and was always willing to cook for a crowd, be it her own family, church group, or something for the Air National Guard. She was a member of the Air National Guard Shadow Flight. Marty was a former member of the TOPS club, she had volunteered with The Richland County Prosecutors office as a victim’s witness advocate, and was for a time on the Community Corrections Board. But there was nothing Marty loved more than her family.
Marty leaves behind her husband of 53 years, Dale A. Secrist; three children and their spouses Bonnie and Brian Schulties, Dale and Cheryl Secrist and Bryan and Dusty Secrist; grandchildren David (Jason), Brent and Nathan Schulties, Dustin (Brittany) Secrist, McKenzie and Jonathan Secrist and Diana Bemiller (unofficial adopted granddaughter); great grandchildren Vincent and Marcella Secrist, Cassandra and Parker Schulties, and Corbin and Lexie Bemiller (unofficial adopted great grandchildren).
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Marie Underwood, and an infant son, Carl Douglas.
A memorial service celebrating the life of Martha Bell Secrist will be held on Wednesday, February 15, 2012 at 11AM in Little Washington Congregational Church where the family will receive friends the hour prior from 10-11AM. Pastor Dave Root will officiate.
As per Marty’s wishes, private family graveside services were held in Little Washington Cemetery.
