Martha Barbara Warden, age 86, of Mount Vernon passed away on Wednesday, May 14, 2014 at the Country Club Retirement Center in Mount Vernon.

She was born on February 3, 1928 in Perry, Ohio to the late Paul and Barbara (Kuntz) Szaniszlo. She was first employed as a lab assistant at the Stauffer Chemical plant in Perry, Ohio after graduating from high school. Her experience there led her to leave home to further her education in Cleveland. Martha was a graduate of Perry High School (1946), Cleveland College (1950) and Johnson County Community College in KS.

Martha was a Secretary and Bookkeeper for numerous firms in Cleveland, Worthington, Houston, TX and Overland Park, KS. She was a stay at home mom when her sons were young.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Mount Vernon. She served as a Deaconess and was involved in the Women’s Bible Study.

Martha was an accomplished cook, especially dishes that reflected her Hungarian roots. She enjoyed reading, sewing for herself and her granddaughters, gardening, travel, singing in church choir and attending concerts of the Cleveland Orchestra. She loved to attend her grandchildren’s events and was a big part of their lives even though they lived far away from her. Everyone who knew Martha well thought she was a very special person in so many ways. She was kind, caring, humble, giving and funny.

She is survived by her husband Jack Warden whom she married on September 11, 1955 in Fairport Harbor, Ohio; two sons, Dwight (Lorraine) Warden of Blackduck, MN, Thomas (Becky Cottrell) Warden of The Woodlands, TX; grandchildren Alicia (Michael) Chilton of Des Moines, IA, Elliott (Elizabeth) Warden of Normal, IL, Elizabeth Warden of Nqutu, Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa, Emily Warden of Lester Prairie, MN and her fiancé Alan Holasek of St. Paul, MN; her brother Ernest Szaniszlo of Perry, OH; nieces Janet Ailes of Morgantown, WV, and Mary Jane (Jeff) Regalis of Boliva, NC.

Besides her parents, Martha was preceded in death by her brother Paul Szaniszlo and her niece Barbara Riedy.

Martha’s family will greet friends one hour prior to the memorial service which will be held on Monday, June 2, 2014 at the First Presbyterian Church her in Mount Vernon beginning at 1PM. Interment will be at the Perry Township Cemetery in Perry, OH.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children.
