MANSFIELD: Marjorie A. Davis, 85, of Markey Street, Bellville, and formerly of Vanderbilt Road, Mansfield, died Thursday August 16, 2001 in Lexington Court Care Center.

Now alive with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Marjorie was born March 27, 1916 in Richland County to Edward and Clara (Lehnhart) Bletz, was graduated from Madison High School, and earned her teacher’s certificate from Ashland University.

During the late 1930’s, she taught grades 1-8 at the former Bridgeport School, a one-room schoolhouse on Mansfield’s old South Main Street at Straub Road. She later would substitute with Lexington Local Schools.

Marjorie was a lifetime member and instrumental in founding Hilltop Community Church on German Church Road. She served the congregation through many capacities as Pastor’s wife. Her husband the Rev. James R. Davis served the church for forty years. He preceded her in death on January 10, 1993.

She was a notable local advocate of foreign adoptions through Holt International, enjoyed gardening, and was currently attending Clear Fork Alliance Church.

She is survived by six daughters and four sons-in-law Joan M. & Michael Smith of Mansfield, Jeanine R. Burkholder of Fredericktown, Janet S. & Douglas Coole of Butler, Judith A. & Gary Hoam and Joy L. & Steven Motter all of Bellville and Jenifer K. Davis of Mansfield; three sons and daughters-in-law Daniel Z. & Carolyn Davis of Fredericktown, Dr. Timothy R. & Teresa Davis of Bellville and Marc J. & Kari Davis of Mansfield; a foster daughter Pearl F. Ofer of Canton; 19 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; a sister and brother-in-law Clara & Dr. Don Martin of Mount Vernon; two brothers and a sister-in-law Emerson Bletz of Mansfield and Howard & Joyce Bletz of Butler; and brother-in-law Walter Bletz of Mansfield.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a grandson Timothy P. Davis, Jr.; a son-in-law Gary Burkholder; and two sisters Cleva Wolf Bletz and Evangeline Bletz.

Friends may call Saturday August 18, 2001 from 4-8 pm in the Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home. The service celebrating her life will be held Sunday August 19, 2001 at 2 pm in Hilltop Community Church, 2943 German Church Road. Dr. Michael V. Stine will officiate, assisted by Dr. Don Martin. Burial will follow in St. Peter’s Cemetery.

Memorial contributions to the Tim Davis, Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund of the Richland County Foundation may be made at the funeral home.
