Mansfield: At the young age of 17, Marie Stelling made the long journey overseas from Germany to the United States in search of better opportunities. Five years later, on July 7, 1959 she became a U.S. Citizen.

Marie Christine Young, age 72, of Mansfield, passed away Sunday September 6, 2009 in MedCentral Mansfield Hospital following a short illness.

She was born January 10, 1937 in Alfstedt, Germany the daughter of Johann and Anna Marie (Miller) Stelling.

While earning her citizenship, Marie lived in Brooklyn, New York where she worked during the day and attended night school to receive her Administrative Certification. During this time, Marie forged a lifelong friendship with Helga, another young German woman also attending classes and living in the same neighborhood.

While attending a mixer at a local German dance hall, Marie met Charles W. Young, Jr., a handsome young veteran. Though there was no question, Marie could have the pick of the gentleman, Charles stole her heart. They were married December 7, 1963.

The couple moved to Massachusetts for Charles’ work and later to Connecticut, and finally to Mansfield in 1974. Marie dedicated her time and talents to raising her three boys.

A woman of many talents, she enjoyed both floral and vegetable gardening, and was always proud of her tomatoes. Marie also enjoyed sewing, knitting and needlework.

Marie was a member of Freedom Years, a local group of seniors who traveled together. Some of her most noted trips where to Europe, the former Soviet Union, Alaska, and a cruise to the Panama Canal.

She was a member of the Welcome Wagon, a group that visited new members of the community with the goal of making them feel more comfortable and acquainted with Mansfield. Marie was also a member of the Liederkranz.

Marie dedicated many years as a member of First English Lutheran Church. She was also on the Kitchen Committee and volunteered as a greeter and usher.

She is survived by three sons Walter John Young of Columbus, Robert Sterling Young of Los Angeles, California, and Scott David and Kellie Young of Columbus; three grandchildren Nicole Young age 4, Aiden Young age 3, and Jackson Young of just 5 months. Also surviving is a sister Ida Dalessio of Brooklyn, New York; a niece Annmarie; a dear friend Helga Rolick of New Jersey, along with other nieces, nephews and extended family remaining in Germany.

Marie was preceded in death by her husband Charles W. Young, Jr. on February 15, 2005, a sister Anita Becker, two brothers Herbert and Henry Stelling; a brother-in-law Frank Dalessio, and a dear friend John Rolick.

Friends may call Friday, September 11, 2009 from 10 am to 12 pm in First English Lutheran Church, 53 Park Avenue West, Mansfield, where the funeral service celebrating the life of Marie Christine Young will follow at 12 pm. The Rev. Cloyd Cress will officiate. Burial will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park.
