Maria C. Cox
November 01, 1935 ‒ November 04, 2008
Maria C. Cox, age 73, of Marengo, died Tuesday afternoon, November 4, 2008, at Morrow County Hospital following an extended illness.
She was born in Jagersburg, Germany, on November 1, 1935, the daughter of the late Albert and Maria Frisch.
In 1958, Maria met a young United States Air Force airman and married Everett Cox in Germany on August 26, 1960 shortly before his discharge. The following November, Maria joined Everett in Columbus, Ohio to begin their 48 years of marriage.
In addition to German, Maria was fluent with the French language and within a few years had mastered English and proudly attained US citizenship. Though not particularly partisan in her politics, she happily enjoyed “cancelling out” her husband’s vote.
An excellent homemaker, Maria reigned supreme in the kitchen. She was well known for her baking, especially German style cakes and cookies. When leaving for work, Everett’s lunchbag contained enough for 3 or 4 heavy eaters but always came back empty. Maria often brought a complete meal for the entire office and earned the gratitude of 30 people (and perhaps a couple promotions for Everett).
In 1975 Maria and Everett started building a house in Marengo with the help of teenage daughter Miriam and Everett’s elderly mother and 5 years later moved into the current Cox residence. A woman of faith, Maria became a member of the Marengo Christian Church.
Until age and illness imposed restrictions, Maria was a very active lady. Bowling, camping, swimming, gardening are but a few of the many things she enjoyed. Ceramic art and painting were among her indoor accomplishments.
Having a soft spot for animals, she got much pleasure watching the many deer sharing the acreage and could not turn away any of the many “inherited” cats that now thrive on the property. Maria especially loved one impish trouble maker who earned “indoor” honors and became her Baby. She even quit fussing at the raccoons who come each night to steal kitty food and insisted a little extra be put out just for them.
She will be missed by her husband, Everett Cox, of Marengo; her daughter and son-in-law, Miriam & Doug Walters of Mount Gilead; two grandchildren: Danielah Maria Straight, and Christopher Allen Rankin; and her brother, Alois Frisch of Jagersburg, Germany.
In addition to her parents, Maria was preceded in death by her brother, Alfons Frisch.
Her family will greet friends from 2 – 5 p.m. on Sunday, November 9, at the Snyder Funeral Home, 76 S. Main St., Mt. Gilead, where services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, with Pastor Garrard Haubrich officiating. Burial will follow in Marengo Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Marengo Christian Church, 3904 State Route 229, Marengo, Ohio 43334.
