Margaret L. Madden Beard of Delaware, formerly of Mt. Gilead, died March 6, 2008 in Delaware at the Willow Brook Christian Village. She was born in Fultonham, Ohio on October 22, 1914, the daughter of the late Amos L. and Charlotte Brown Madden. She graduated from Columbus North High School in 1932 and received her B. S. in Education from The Ohio State University in 1936. On December 25, 1936, she married R. Stark Beard, who preceded her in death on October 13, 1991. She helped operate the family farm in Knox and Morrow Counties and substitute taught for Morrow County high schools. She moved to Delaware from Mt. Gilead in 2000.

Margaret was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church. She was very active in the Trinity United Methodist Church in Mt. Gilead, United Methodist Women, Church Women United, the East Ohio Conference and the Mt. Vernon District of the United Methodist Church. She also funded a classroom at Methesco United Methodist Seminary in Delaware. Her past memberships include Mother’s Forum, AAUW, Progress Club, Morrow County Hospital Couples Twig, Green Pairs Garden Club, and Morrow County Retired Teachers Association. She and her husband were long-time participants in the Morrow County Fair. She published her memoirs, “Not in This House,” in 1998 and continued to write vignettes from her life as a passionate hobby. She was known for her laugh and her smile, her love of conversation, and most importantly, her deep and caring relationships with family and friends.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law Charlotte and R. Douglas Slack of College Station, Texas; granddaughter Deanne Boland of Littleton, Colorado; granddaughter and family Kathleen and Chris Noack and sons Andrew and Steven of Austin, Texas; grandson and family Stark Alan and Julie Beard and son Stark Kaden of Sugar Hill, Georgia; granddaughter and family Sandra and Eric Glover and sons Edward and Henry of Guilford, Connecticut; and granddaughter and family Angela and Sean Sullivan and children John and Shannon of Chico, California.

She was also preceded in death by two sons Ranald and Bruce; four sisters Vylee Lutz, Mabel Collins, Helen Cramer, and Betty Buckman; and a brother John Madden.

A celebration of her life will be held Saturday, March 29, 2008 at 1:30 in the Terrace Room at Willow Brook Christian Village, 100 Willow Brook Way South in Delaware, Ohio. Burial will take place in Sunbury Memorial Park.
