Bellville, Ohio
Formerly of Mount Gilead, Ohio

Loyd “Monroe” Keen, age 73, of Bellville and formerly of Mount Gilead, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Thursday evening, January 30, 2020, at Country Meadows Care Center in Bellville.

On November 23, 1946, Monroe was born in Richlands, Virginia, a son of the late Lester and Thelma (Shoupe) Keen.

For many years, Monroe worked in the coal mines of Virginia and then was a welder in Shelby.

A man of deep faith, Monroe was a long time member of the North Woodbury Free Will Baptist Church, where he enjoyed singing.  He loved the Lord and had the heart of a servant.

Monroe loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter.  If it moved, he shot it.  He really enjoyed playing Bingo also.

Family meant the world to Monroe.  He cherished spending time with the children and grandchildren.  He also enjoyed taking care of his black Labs and cats.

Monroe will be remembered as a bit of an ornery man who was easily your best friend.  He could be quite the comedian and was a compassionate, giving soul.

Monroe will be dearly missed by his wife, Gladys (Mullins) Keen; three children: Jessica (Bob) Tinkey of Johnsville, Lester Keen of Johnsville, Tabby (Brad) Brooks of Shelby; 11 grandchildren: Alex (Addie) Tinkey, Kaitie (Ray) Riggins, Levi Tinkey, Kelly (Dougie) Keen, Lester “Little Lester” Keen, Trinity Keen, Remington Keen, Jaclynn Keen, Shyanne Brooks, Alexis Eichenberger, Destiny Eichenberger; four great grandchildren; two brothers: Jessie (Omie) Keen of Mount Vernon, Kenneth (Billie Jo) Keen of Johnsville; three sisters: Irene (Keith) Nichols of Mount Gilead, Pansy Yoder of Mount Gilead, Juanita Lewis of Mansfield; and numerous other extended family members.

In addition to his parents, he we preceded in death by a son, Bobby Keen; brother, Rondal Keen; and two sisters: Jackie Gillispie and Bessie “Lula Belle” Hammond.

Monroe’s family will greet friends from 11:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 4, 2020, at the North Woodbury Free Will Baptist Church, 6186 State Route 314, Mount Gilead, OH.  Services to honor and celebrate his life will begin there at 1:30 p.m. with Pastor Rob Ratcliff officiating.  Burial will follow in Shauck Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Snyder Funeral Homes of Mount Gilead to assist with the funeral expenses.

  • So sorry for the loss of such an amazing man. Monroe was one of the most caring and loving men I’ve ever known and I’m just so honored to have gotten to be his daughter in law for the time I was and mostly he was like a dad to me a grandpa to my boys as well as he was Kelly my daughter grandpa. Monroe always treated my other kids just like his own grandkids always treated everyone with kindness. I’ll never forget all the fun happy times we had and all the jokes and making me laugh like he did. Monroe ( grandpa) I love you and I miss you and will always carry you in my heart. The Lord took you home where you can rest in peace. Prayers go out to the family. I pray for healing Amen.
