Lowell Ashbrook

June 09, 1917 ‒ December 12, 2008

Mount Gilead, Ohio

Lowell Ashbrook of Mount Gilead died Friday evening, December 12, 2008 at the Morrow County Hospital after a blessed and full 91 years.

He was born on June 9, 1917 just south of Mount Gilead on a local farm, the son of the late Raleigh F. and Lulu F. (Rinehart) Ashbrook.

Lowell has been a fixture in the Mount Gilead community living here all 91 years. He worked for H.P.M. as a Tool and Die Maker for 45 years, retiring in 1982 and has been a member of the First Baptist Church for over 50 years. He also served on Village Council for 10 years, earning his seat as a write-in candidate. He was a member of the Lion’s Club and a 50 year member of the Mount Gilead Masonic Lodge.

On March 16, 1941 Lowell married Maxine Evelyn Linder at the Denmark United Methodist Church. They have shared a love and friendship that has spanned 67 years! Maxine recalled their 50th Wedding Anniversary trip to Hawaii with two of their close friends.

With a love of the outdoors, Lowell spent hours working on his yard. He was well known throughout the neighborhood for his meticulous lawn care. He would sometimes mow 3 times a day if it was not just right! Their corner lot and his friendly nature were a good pair, as Lowell was always waving to folks passing by.

His appreciation for the outdoors did not end with his lawn. Lowell also was a fisherman and hunter. He enjoyed hunting for rabbit and squirrel.

Lowell’s attention to detail led him from his roll as a Tool and Die maker to an amateur woodworker. He made anything from furniture to ornaments. His legacy will live on in the Hope Chests he made for his grand daughters or the cradles he made for his great grandchildren.

Whether it was in work or play Lowell was extremely independent and self-sufficient, because to him it had to be done right and if he did it, it would be.

Lowell was well liked and people enjoyed being around him. This was a result of his loving personality and the way he made you feel if you came into their home.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife Maxine and their children Lonnie (Karen) Ashbrook of Hudson, Florida, Jerry (Bonnie) Ashbrook of Lewis Center, and Vicki Gooding of Westerville; grandchildren Jerry (Teresa) Ashbrook, Kelli (James) Fisher, Scott (Bridget) Gooding, Amy (Ryan) Clifton, Arleigh (Robert) Jones and Eric Ashbrook; great grandchildren Jordan, Taylor, Nick, Kaitlyn, Jake, Emma, Sarah, Alex, Deric, Savannah, Tyler, Terra, Merlin, and Eve; his sister Marjorie Wormell of Galion; his sister-in-law Virginia Linder of Edison; numerous nieces and nephews; and many friends.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his son-in-law James Gooding and his sisters Louise Lawyer, Beulah Fry, and Mary Dray.

Friends may call on the family on Monday December 15, 2008 from 4-8 p.m. at the Snyder Funeral Homes, Craven Chapel, 67 North Main Street, Mount Gilead. Pastors Dennis Shultz and Joshua Melvin will conduct funeral services there on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow in Rivercliff Cemetery.
