Louise Catera, age 92, of Caledonia and formerly of Trumbull, Connecticut, was received into Heaven early Wednesday morning, April 1, 2009, at the Woodside Village Care Center in Mount Gilead.

She was born in New York City and was formerly of Riverdale, New York, Louise was the first daughter of Clement and Catherine Potenza Ricchetti.

Louise graduated from Hunter College of New York City with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1938, where she was President of the Beta Chapter of Pi Phi Alpha Sorority and a member of the Newman Club and Pan Hellenic Society.

Shortly following graduation, she married Joseph M. Catera on July 12, 1941, who preceded her in death.

First, Louise was employed in the Bureau of Standards and Testing at Hearns Department Store in New York City. During World War II, she was employed as an Inspector of Naval Materials by the Bureau of Naval Materials at 30 Church St. in NYC. Later she taught in New York City for two years before moving to Trumbull in 1958. Louise then received her Masters of Science degree from the University of Bridgeport and the 6th Year Diploma in Administration and Supervision from the University of Bridgeport and Fairfield University. She was a member of Dr. Lydia A. Duggins Reading Group in “Experimental Research in Reading.” She taught and was a reading consultant for 25 years in Trumbull and was a member of the PTA, CEA, TEA, and NEA. Other reading based education involvements include membership with the CT Association of Reading Research, the Language Arts Steering Committee and the Right 2 Read Task Force. Also, she conducted a Read-a-thon at Jane Ryan Elementary.

A member of the Alpha Kappa State BETA Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, an honorary organization of women teachers, she was awarded a 30 year member service pin in April 2007. She was furthermore a member of the Greater Bridgeport Retired Teachers Association.

A resident of Trumbull for over 50 years, Louise was past President of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 141 of Trumbull, a member of the Jenny Lind Doll Club and was a life member of the League of St. Joseph’s Manor and served as financial secretary. She served on the board of St. Theresa Senior Club as treasurer and secretary and was a board member of Chestnut Hill Senior Club and program chairperson of the American Association of Retired People Chapter 958 of Trumbull. She was a Board member of the Nichols Memorial Library in Trumbull and the Trumbull Land Trust.

She was a member of St. Theresa Church and served as a Den Mother for 3 years for St. Theresa Cub Scouts.

Louise has resided at Woodside Village Care Center in Mount Gilead since 2003. She was a member of Sacred Hearts Church.

Louise will be dearly missed by her son and his wife, Joseph C. and Rosemary K. Catera, of Caledonia; and their children: Joseph John, Katherine Anne, and Cynthia Louise Catera; second son, Lawrence Catera; and a sister-in-law, Olga Catera DeRogatis; and two nieces and many cousins.

The Catera family will greet friends from 4 – 7 p.m. on Monday, April 6, at the Snyder Funeral Home, 76 S. Main St., Mount Gilead. A funeral mass celebration of her life will be held on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at the Sacred Hearts Church, 4680 US Route 42 N, Cardington, with Fathers John Bakle and Charles Foeller as celebrants. Burial will follow in Marion Cemetery.
