Letha Ilene Crow

March 26, 1943 ‒ September 27, 2020

Elyria, Ohio

Letha Ilene Crow, 77, of Elyria, died Sunday, September 27, 2020 after a brief stay at Ames Family Hospice House in Westlake.

Letha was born March 26, 1943 in Marietta and was the daughter of the late Archie “Russell” and Ada Caldwell.

Working on and off as a teacher and a social worker after receiving her master’s degree from the Ohio State University, she dedicated her life to raising a family with her husband of 55 years, Gary A. Crow.

She co-authored several crisis intervention, suicide prevention, and mental health books with Gary as well as co-presented with him at hundreds of workshops around the country. She also held faculty positions at Ohio Wesleyan University and Urbana University.

Living at times in the Ohio cities of Delaware, West Liberty, Xenia, and Elyria and in Concord, N.C., she and Gary, whom she met as an undergraduate at Ohio University, took on life’s challenges side by side whether that meant serving as foster parents, attending their kids’ and grandkids’ sporting events in terrible weather, moving for better job opportunities, or adopting and raising a second round of kids after the first three were grown and flown.

An amazing cook, Letha could make anything. Family members anxiously awaited, usually lacking patience, to taste her latest feast for breakfast, lunch, dinner or dessert. Holiday meals were extraordinary in their variety and deliciousness and always prepared with love.

Her talents were as impressive as they were varied. She spent nine years in 4-H and used that craftiness not only to make clothes but legendary Halloween costumes. She also played the accordion and had the greenest thumb around.

She showered affection and gifts, many of them homemade, on her children and grandchildren who adored her. The lessons she taught, the love she shared, and the discipline she instilled will never be forgotten.

Letha is survived by husband Gary of Elyria, daughter Carene of Fairview Park, son Bret (Beth) of Delaware, granddaughter Marissa (Kyle) of Maumee, grandson Brock of Lakewood, granddaughter Faith of Delaware, grandson David of Delaware, and great-granddaughter Meredith of Maumee.

Letha was preceded in death by her parents, her siblings, and daughter Lisha.

A private family graveside service will be held at Oak Grove Cemetery in Delaware.

The Snyder-Rodman Funeral Center of Delaware, Ohio is assisting the family.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Pilot Dogs Inc., 625 W. Town St., Columbus, OH 43215.

  • Gary-

What a wonderful conversation about Letha.

My heart aches for you and your family, and I am so sad that we were unable to get together amid the distancing forced upon us this year.

  • Dear Gary and family,
We shared the joy of Morgan’s and Lisha’s wedding and the addition of Stormy and then we shared the loss of Morgan and Lisha and in another way the loss of Storm.
We are so sorry for this new loss but feel certain that Letha is now enjoying the company of Lisha and Morgan once again.
If we can be of assistance in any way, please let us know. Our prayers are with you.

    Jerry and Corliss Manuel
