Leroy R. Carrington
June 04, 1943 ‒ March 18, 2014
MANSFIELD: Leroy Carrington loved to tell the story about the time he shared a cigar with Brooks Hatlen. With a cameo appearance in the movie The Shawshank Redemption (1994), he and James Whitmore (as Brooks) appear together in a bus scene. Ever after considered a “movie star,” Leroy loved to tell folks that the producers wanted him for the shower scene – but Leroy declined 😉
Yes, Leroy was a great storyteller – he loved to laugh and make others laugh – and easily made friends wherever he went.
Remembered as a hardworking man with a fun spirit, Leroy went to be with the Lord Tuesday, March 18, 2014 from Hospice of North Central Ohio. He was 70.
Born June 4, 1943 in Baltimore, Maryland, he was the son of Roy and Thelma Gertrude (McDaniel) Carrington.
At age 19 Leroy took a job with Richland Shale Brick, and worked a while as a welder in Tampa, Fla., at Muslim Steel. After coming to Mansfield, he worked over 20 years with Westinghouse as a press operator, assembly set-up and as a group leader. It was there at Westinghouse that he met another employee Faye (Rose). Leroy got ahead on his own work and helped Faye with her’s. Who could resist that? Leroy and Faye were married July 5, 1980.
Leroy was a member of Mansfield Freewill Baptist Church, and gave testimony of his saving faith at the age of 16.
He enjoyed fishing and bowling, gardening and pitching horseshoes. At euchre, he’d cheat every chance he got (or accuse you), and though he was competitive, he was no “respecter of persons”…Leroy valued everyone he met regardless of their station in life.
He is survived by his wife Faye; their children Leroy (Tammy) Carrington, Jr. of Willard, Twatha Sparks of Mansfield, Rita Wallace of Lexington and Theresa (Roger) Brokaw of Bellville; 11 grandchildren, eight great grandchildren; brother Philip Carrington in North Carolina; sister Tianne Carrington in West Virginia and a cherished lifelong friend Earl Salyers of Mansfield.
He was preceded in death by a sister Jewel “Judy” Petry and a brother Jerry Wayne Carrington.
The Carrington family will receive friends Thursday, March 20, 2014 from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Bellville Snyder Funeral Home, where a funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. Pastor Mark Bailey will officiate. Visitation continues Saturday afternoon March 22 in Counts Chapel on Nealy Ridge near Clinchco, Virginia, where a funeral service will follow. His brother-in-law the Rev. Carl Rose will officiate. Burial will be in Grace Cemetery adjacent to the church building.
Memorial Contributions to Mansfield Freewill Baptist Church may be made at the funeral home.
