Mansfield, Ohio

MANSFIELD: Leonard O. “Butch” Free, Jr., 50, of West Prospect Street, Mansfield, died Tuesday morning in the emergency room of MedCentral Mansfield Hospital following a sudden illness.

He was born April 1, 1957 in Mansfield and remained a lifelong area resident. He attended the automotive program of Pioneer Joint Vocational School and was graduated from Lucas High School in 1975.

A mechanic since the age of ten, Leonard was banned from the barn for tearing down Grandpa’s tractor! He had a huge interest in cars, in tearing them down, in fixing them, and making them run. He kept everybody’s car running.

Racing, racing and racing was a favored hobby, and Leonard had been a member of the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Club.

As a father, Leonard enjoyed focused time with his son. His camping trips started in grandpa and grandma Free’s backyard, and ventured further and further into the woods each year.

He was a member of Ontario Free Methodist Church, where he served as youth group leader, nursery volunteer and a member of the social committee.

Leonard will be remembered for his kindness and compassion, helpfulness and generosity; but it is his sense of humor that friends and family will not forget.

He is survived by his wife Cherie (Schultz) Free, whom he married October 5, 1985; their son Christopher M. Free; his parents Leonard O., Sr. and Mary Ann (Hardin) Free of Lucas; brothers and a sister and their spouses Michael and Lynn Free of Mansfield, Kathryn Obrecht of Whitehall, John and Janet Free of Mansfield and Howard A. Free of Westerville; his father-in-law and mother-in-law Terry and Mary Schultz of Fort Wayne, Indiana; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Scott and Colleen Schultz of Alexandria, Diane and Ray Gullett of Mansfield and Laurie and Tim Haag of Perrysville; a grandmother-in-law Mary Kuhn of Port Clinton; numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and brothers and sisters in Christ.

The family will receive friends today, Thursday, November 15, 2007 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM in the Lexington Avenue Snyder Funeral Home. The worship service, giving glory to God and thanksgiving for the life of Leonard Free, Jr. will be held Friday, November 16 at 10:30 AM in Ontario Free Methodist Church, 2200 Bedford Blvd., Ontario. Pastor Jim Carder will officiate. Burial will follow in Mount Zion Cemetery near Lucas.

Memorial contributions to the American Diabetes Association or to the Christopher Free Education Fund may be made at the funeral home.
