LENA MARIE JONES MACAN
Lena (Lee to her family and friends), passed from this life on January 19, 2014 in Sun City West, Arizona, seven days after a debilitating stroke.
Lee was born December 14, 1925 in Delaware County, Ohio, to Walter and Ariel (Barrows) Jones. She grew up in the hamlet of Berkshire, Ohio, and graduated from Brown Township High School. She then moved to Delaware, Ohio, attending Ohio Wesleyan University for two years. In 1947 she moved to Columbus, Ohio, where she met Thomas Macan, an engineering student at Ohio State University. They were married in 1952. Upon his graduation, Tom took a job with General Motors Public Relations Department, beginning a 37-year career with GM.
Lee and Tom then moved to Michigan and, in 1956, settled in Rochester, a Detroit suburb, where they spent their next 40 years. Their son Edward was born in 1961. During the late 1950s and 1960s Lee was very active in the local chapter of Sweet Adelines, singing in an award-winning quartet which performed in Carnegie Hall. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, her interest shifted to the fine arts. During the 1980s and 1990s, Lee won many awards and ribbons for her work, excelling especially in oil painting, pastels, and sculpture.
In 1996, Tom and Lee moved to Sun City West, Arizona. In 2002, Tom and Lee celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary by taking a cruise up the Rhine River. Upon their return, they purchased a second home in Eureka, California, where they enjoyed the cooler summer climate with their son Ed and his family. Lee continued her production as an artist into the 2000s, when rheumatoid arthritis made it increasingly difficult for her to continue.
Lee and Tom were members of the Church on the Green in Sun City West. In addition, Lee enjoyed volunteering her time and talent to many organizations, both in Michigan and in Arizona. She was a woman of wide interests, deep intellectual curiosity, and a passion for living, a compassionate person who was enthusiastically supportive of her family. She passed on to her son, granddaughters, and great-granddaughter a can-do attitude, an ethic of responsibility, and an insistence on grappling with the big issues of life even when it wasn’t comfortable. She will be dearly missed.
Lee is preceded in death by her father, Walter; her mother, Ariel; her sister Evelyn (Freeman) Prior and brother-in-law Walter “Pete” Prior; her brother Robert and sister-in-law Wanda Freeman; and her niece Peggy (Prior) Dunghe. She is survived by her beloved husband of 61 years, Tom (Sun City West, AZ); her son Edward Macan and his wife Connie (Eureka, CA); her granddaughter Catherine Macan (Eureka, CA); and her granddaughter Nicole Macan and great-granddaughter Aaliyah Macan-Chaney (Arcata, CA). She is also survived by niece Rozi (Freeman) Brown (New Albany, OH) and family; niece Patty (Prior) McGinnis (Ada, MI) and family; niece Carolyn (Prior) Tauche (Columbus, OH) and family; niece Donna (Prior) Butcher (Red Bank, NJ) and family; and niece Lori (Freeman) Thomas (Pace, FL) and family.
There will be a memorial service on Saturday, May 31 at 1:00 p.m. at the DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, 75 W. William Street, Delaware, Ohio. Inurnment will be immediately afterward at the Berlin Township-New Cheshire Cemetery, Delaware, Ohio.
