Lawrence D. “Sonny” Young Sr., 71, of Mount Gilead died Monday March 17, 2008 at noon at the Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus after having a heart attack. He had fought a courageous year long battle with lung cancer.

He was born on May 1, 1936 in Westfield in Morrow County the son of the late Lloyd G. and Bessie Marie (Moodispaugh) Young.

On June 17, 1970 he married Clarisa Hubbard.

Sonny worked for Peabody’s in Galion as a welder for 27 years until his retirement in 1998. Though, his passion was in carpentry and woodworking. If you visited any of his homes you would have noticed his handiwork.

He was a Veteran of the United States Army and belonged locally to the Mount Gilead VFW Post #8054 and the Delaware American Legion Post #0888.

Sonny enjoyed the peaceful solitude of nature and could spend hours fishing at Alum Creek.

His family will remember him as a happy man. One who would do anything for anyone. His quick wit kept you on your toes and he always was ready with a return joke.

He will be missed by his wife Clarisa; five children Brenda (John) Jarrell of Streetsboro, Peggy (Ron) Hunter of Portland, Oregon, Lawrence D. Young Jr. of Columbus, Allen (Debbie) Thompson of Mount Gilead, and Cheryl Berry of Dublin; seven grandchildren; one great grandchild; and two brothers Harold “Bud” Young of Mount Gilead and Kenny Young of Fulton.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by 2 sisters Kathryn Bean and Janice High; and his brother Ronald Young.

Friends may call on the family on Thursday March 20, 2008 from 4-7 p.m. at the Snyder Funeral Homes, Craven Chapel, 67 North Main Street, Mount Gilead. Pastor Joyce Burgess will conduct services there on Friday at 1:00 p.m. Burial with full military honors conducted by the VFW Post #8054 and the AmVets Post #87 will follow in Fulton Cemetery.
