Lamont E. “Monty” Schisler

Lamont E. “Monty” Schisler, age 84, of Columbiana departed this life on Thursday, November 3, 2005 and went to be with his heavenly Father.
Lamont “Monty” was born on May 31, 1921 in Austintown, Ohio the son of Charles L. and Sarah B. (Minck) Schisler. He was a graduate of Austintown Fitch High School, where he was a standout athlete in football, basketball, track, and baseball. After high school and before World War II, he was signed by the St. Louis Browns Minor League Baseball Team. Monty enlisted in the United States Marines and during the War he served with the United States Marines in the South Pacific. He was a combat veteran of campaigns including Guam, Wake, Bouganville, Okinowa, Guadacanal, and the invasion of Iwo Jima, where he was wounded and witnessed the historic flag raising. He was awarded the Purple Heart.
Lamont retired from Republic Steel in Warren in 1983 after working 30 years as a mill operator. Lamont remained active in all aspects of farming in Berlin Center and Columbiana, where he lived for the last 30 years. He was an active outdoorsman, partaking in hunting, and fishing expeditions around the world. He was a member of the National Rifleman’s Association, The Ohio and National Right to Life Organizations, Feed the Children, Children International, Home for Boys, Veteran’s Association, and various other charities.
He was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and brother. Those who knew him will always remember his generosity, kindness, and courage. He was a soul possessed of boundless devoutness to family and God. We thank God for the time we had together. We shall find comfort knowing that he is at eternal rest and peace at home in heaven in the presence of the Lord. He shall be greatly missed.
Lamont leaves to cherish his memory, a loving and devoted wife of 60 years, the former Beatrice D. Oveido, whom he married on October 21, 1945 in San Diego, CA; eight children Diane (Bill) Long of Delaware, OH, Vernon (Deborah) Schisler of Huron, OH, Dane C. Schisler of Columbus, OH, Curtis S. Schisler of Columbus, OH, David A. Schisler of Columbus, OH, Arnold L (Anissa Yeager) Schisler of Ostrander, OH, Scott M (Brenda Yeager) Schisler of Delaware, OH, Susan Melton of Myrtle Beach, SC; ten grandchildren Christopher, Brad, Elizabeth, Amy, Nick, Raymond, Johanna, Christina, Joey, and Sam; four great grandchildren Will, Nick, Joseph, and Madison; a brother Wade (Vivian) Schisler of Austintown, and sisters-in-law Vera of Los Angelos, Connie of San Diego, Betty of Riverside, CA, and Lucy of Hollywood, CA, and a long time friend Chuck Booth of North Jackson.
He was preceded in heaven by his parents Charles and Sarah Schisler formerly of Austintown, a sister Mel Schisler Erickson, and a brother Douglas Schisler.
Family received friends from 2 until 5 p.m. Sunday, in the Lane Funeral Home Austintown Chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. at the St. Mary Catholic Church, 82 E. William St., Delaware, with Father Kevin Kavanagh celebrant. Burial with military honors will follow at St. Mary Cemetery.
