Pastor L. Russell Ice, age 91 of Altoona, PA (formerly of Delaware), went home to be with the Lord, Tuesday, January 21, 2014. Russell was born in Fairmont, WV, February 14, 1922, the eldest son of the late Virgil and Louise Ice. Russell was a World War II veteran (Army) with military training at the Citadel in Charleston, SC. A graduate of Southland Bible Institute in Kentucky, he pastored churches in Ohio, Kentucky and West Virginia. He also was an educator, teaching Bible and pastoral classes at Southland Bible Institute in Pikeville, KY, and serving as Dean of Students. His hobbies were photography and coin collecting. Russell was beloved by all of his offspring for his many humorous sayings and happy demeanor. He was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Delaware.
Russell is survived by sons, Lawrence (Patricia) Ice of Lebanon, OH and Pastor William (Gena) Ice of Altoona, PA (who he had lived with since November, 2011); grandchildren, Greg (Dee) Ice of Delaware, Michele (Steve) Gammel of Arvada, CO, Billie Jean (Tom) Elings of North Pole, Alaska, Jennifer (Chuck) Bryant of Hannibal, MO, and Scott (Kendra) Ice of Windsor, CO; 12 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of nearly 65 years, L. Elizabeth Ice in 2006, two siblings, Mary Elizabeth Ice and Ray Ice, as well as in-laws Georgeanna Ice and Frank and Genevieve Rinker. Russell had the great pleasure of having united in marriage both of his sons and one grandson and of having participated in the weddings of the other four grandchildren.
Visitation will begin at 10:00 am Saturday, January 25th at Calvary Baptist Church, 1450 Troy Road, Delaware, Ohio 43015 with funeral services to follow at 11:00 am with Russell’s son Bill officiating. Graveside memorial will follow at Cheshire Cemetery weather permitting.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Russell’s memory may be made to the Calvary Baptist Church.
