Kim Phillips

March 01, 1969 ‒ November 15, 2019

Powell, Ohio

POWELL: Throughout her three-year battle with Ovarian Cancer, Kim became known for her personal mantra “I choose joy”. She is now experiencing the greatest joy as she was called home to be with The Lord Friday, November 15, 2019 from the Kobacker House surrounded by her family. She was 50.

Kim was born March 1, 1969, to parents Robert & Lorna (Baker) Burwell in Parkersburg, West Virginia. Kim graduated from Parkersburg High School in 1987 and from Marietta College in 1991.

On September 2, 1989, she married Michael Phillips and they spent 30 wonderful years together.

Kim worked as a Pre-School Teacher from 2006 – 2009 at The Gathering Place and as a Kindergarten Teacher from 2009 – 2017 at Polaris Christian Academy. Kim will be remembered for the special connection she had with the students and families she served.

Kim attended Lifepoint Church-Lewis Center. She made sure God was the first priority in her life. Kim was equally invested in her children’s spiritual growth, praying with them every night and making sure that they had a firm foundation to start their own walk with Jesus.

Those close to Kim remember her as selfless, loving, intentional, generous and thoughtful. One way she lived out these attributes is through her gift giving. She knew the unique gift that would be special to those in her life. Kim would go above and beyond in everything that she did but never wanted the spotlight to be on her. She will be greatly missed.

She is survived by her loving husband Michael Phillips; children Jason (Leah) Phillips and Ashley (Vince) Chickerella; grandson Carson Chickerella; father Robert Burwell; siblings Sandra (Darrell) Anderson and Thomas (Samantha) Burwell; father-in-law Eugene (Peggy) Phillips; in-laws Donald Brown, Debbie (Terry “Butch”) Westfall and Kimberly Phillips; nieces and nephews Alishia (Chad) Nolin, Stephen Anderson, Laura (Jacob) Patterson, Katherine Brown, Cassandra Brown, Alexander Burwell, Christian Burwell and Brooke Newton-Schireman; great-nieces Gwendalyn Nolin and Hazel Patterson.

She was preceded in death by her mother Lorna Burwell, sister Tamara Brown and mother-in-law Charlotte Phillips.

The family would like to thank the medical team and staff of Dr. Kellie Rath at The OhioHealth Bing Cancer Center and Dr. Larry Copeland at The Ohio State University James Comprehensive Cancer Center as well as the Kobacker House.

The Phillips family will receive friends Monday, November 25, 2019, from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. at Lifepoint Church in Lewis Center (7719 Graphics Way, Suite B) where a memorial service honoring her life will begin promptly at 4 p.m. Pastor Dean Fulks will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to: Lifepoint Church C/O Build Initiative or the Ovarian Cancer Alliance of Ohio C/O Darrell’s Mt. Everest Fundraiser. Please bring them to the memorial or send them to the funeral home at P.O. Box 3085, Mansfield, Ohio 44904.

Snyder Funeral Homes is honored to serve Kim’s family and encourage you to share a fond memory or message of condolence to them at

Kim would want to leave you with this — in the midst of trials and heartache, in Christ we can say…

“I choose joy.”
