Kathy Sue Tangen
October 25, 1967 ‒ November 19, 2020
Kathy Sue Tangen (Thomas), 53, of Delaware, Ohio, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on Thursday, November 19, 2020 in Sunbury, Ohio. After being diagnosed with Stage IV Metastatic Cancer in March of 2018, she bravely and fearlessly underwent countless treatments and surgeries, but ultimately succumbed from complications incurred by cancer treatments. She never once wavered in her resilience and stubbornness, and fought with grace and dignity until the very end.
She was born in Delaware, Ohio to the late Mervin (Muggs) Thomas and Jacqueline McAuliffe (Bogan) on October 25, 1967. For eighteen years she was married to Mark Blakeman, tying the knot after the birth of their daughter, Kree in 1991, and later their son Dillon born in 1993. A graduate of Elgin High School in Marion, Ohio, she went on to cosmetology school but ultimately worked in a variety of settings throughout her life. Most notably, the Amvets Post 102 and Delaware County Transit (DATABus) where she amassed many lifelong friends that have now become family.
One of the many highlights of her life came March 30, 2018 when Kathy married her husband Tony Tangen in an intimate ceremony in Delaware, Ohio. Through Tony’s strength and devotion to her, she always had a loving hand to hold and shoulder to cry on throughout this journey. The couple lived in Sunbury, Ohio with their many “therapy” pets as she liked to call them. Over the eight years that Kathy and Tony were together, the number of pets they gathered grew, starting with ; dogs Otis, Roscoe, and Bandit, as well as an inside cat named Reuben and two outdoor cats. They were always her loyal “lap dogs” and stayed by her side throughout the good times and the bad.
Kathy enjoyed more than anything traveling to the beach and seeing the ocean while collecting many flip flop, palm tree, and other themed items throughout the years. Her many trips to Fort Myers, Florida were among her favorite as well as many other trips taken with her husband Tony to places such as Michigan and Minnesota. Her greatest joy though, was being a grandmother, “Mimi”, to her grandchildren Harper (2.5), Dillon Jr. (11 mo), and a grandson on the way. They were the center of her world and no matter what hardships she was going through at the time, she always made it a priority to put a smile on her face for them. Their love for their “Mimi” is what kept her going in the darkest of times and is what fueled her relentlessness to never give up.
Kathy is survived by her beloved family; her husband Tony Tangen; children Kree Blakeman, Dillon (Victoria) Blakeman, and Sydney (Josh) Tangen; grandchildren Harper and Dillon Jr. Blakeman; mother Dorothy (Mervin) Thomas; mother-in-law Loretta Tangen; and sister-in-law Tammy Tangen. She is also survived by brothers George and Mervin Jr. Thomas; sister Jackie Gibson; beloved cousins Virginia (Doug) Myers and Melinda Ross; as well as many other cousins, nieces, and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her beloved father Mervin (Muggs) Thomas; her mother Jacqueline McAuliffe (Bogan); and father-in-law Darwin Stanley Tangen.
