Kathleen T. Schonauer

March 14, 1931 ‒ May 04, 2017

Fredericktown, Ohio

Kathleen T. Schonauer, 86, of Fredericktown, Ohio, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, May 4, 2017 at her home surrounded by her family. She was born on March 14, 1931 in Fredericktown, Ohio, the daughter of Fred Newman and Dora Jane (Cole) Miller. Kathleen was a member of the Palmyra Church of Christ. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, sister-in-law, and friend who will be missed greatly by all who knew her.

On May 29, 1948, Kathleen Miller married the love of her life, Max Schonauer. She became his life partner, confidante, and helpmate, always giving support and lending a helping hand on the farm. Kathleen was not only Max’s soul mate and loyal wife, she was his business partner, and supported Max as manager of Schonauer Apartments and on the family farm, where she never hesitated to help with herding cattle or birthing livestock. She loved her flowers, and spent countless hours canning and freezing garden produce. Together Max and Kathleen raised seven children, and her duties of motherhood and homemaker were her top priority.

In 2001, to fulfill her mother’s wishes, Kathleen became caregiver for her youngest brother, Steven. Kathleen loved her family without limit, and often put her brother, children, and grandchildren before herself. She raised the family with endless patience, was their defender, disciplinarian, and friend. She protected, nurtured, and unconditionally loved them with strong, Christian beliefs and ideals. Kathleen was loved by many and will be missed by all.

Kathleen is survived by Max, her husband of 69 years, and their 7 children; James M. (Jackie) Schonauer, Debra A. (Hank) Burgholder-Solis, Marla J. (Morgan) Dague, Paula K. Schonauer, Julie M. (Keith) Chester, Kathleen A. (Rob) Miller and Mary A. (Tim) Cunningham; 24 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Helen M. Miller; and her brothers; Howard D. (Ruby) Miller and Steven R. Miller.

Kathleen was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Harold E. Miller; and her sister, Juanita M. Fisher.

Friends may call on Monday, May 8, 2017 from 1 to 3 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Palmyra Church of Christ, 21184 Zolman Road, Fredericktown, Ohio 43019. Her funeral service will also be held at Palmyra on Tuesday, May 9, 2017 beginning at 11 a.m. Evangelist Troy Northrop will officiate. Burial will follow in Forest Cemetery, Fredericktown.

Memorial contributions may be made to Palmyra Church of Christ or Hospice of Knox County.

I’m sorry for your loss. Your family is woven into the fond memories I have for Fredericktown, the class of ’72, and all of the other great friends I had there. I would come for your visitation but am caught out of the country at this time. My thoughts are with you.

  • One of the sweetest memories of Kathleen was on a Sunday morning. She and Max sat directly behind us in church. Max had said to Kathleen that he was having trouble with his hearing aid and he was trying to adjust it a little. He told her to say something to him and without hesitation she said ” I love you”. Even though it was between just the two of them I was blessed just to hear those words between them, ” I love you.” Please know that we are sorry to know of her passing, and also know that your family is in our prayers.

  • Dear Max and Family,
When Shawn and I heard the news about Kathleen, we were so sorry for her and for all of you. My thoughts, however, immediately went to some memories of my childhood, when I would be invited to your home and farm. Kathleen was always so good to me, making me feel welcome and comfortable. I remember her allowing me to mow her yard to make some extra money. Such a generous soul. I couldn’t ask any more from an aunt. Her marriage and family gave me a model for a Christian home to follow and was genuine inspiration to me and I’m sure everyone she knew. I know you will all miss her greatly. I pray that God gives you overwhelming grace and peace during this difficult time. Another saint for heaven to enjoy has gone home.
    With all my love,
    Jim Heaton
