Mansfield: June Elaine Stephan Kaplan, formerly of Dickson

Parkway, Mansfield, Ohio passed away Thursday morning April 14,

2011 in Mansfield Memorial Homes. She was 88.

Born June 27, 1922 in Dayton, she was the daughter of Charles and

Kathryn (Healy) Stephan, and was graduated from Seton High School

in Cincinnati in 1940. In her youth she toured throughout Ohio as

a dancer with the Dayton Balancing Ball Follies.

Mrs. Kaplan attended the University of Maryland and the University

of Minnesota, and earned her Masters degree from the Ohio State

University, where she also took classes toward her Ph.D. in adult

education.

Mrs. Kaplan worked for American Airlines in California and the American Red Cross in Minnesota and Texas. As a licensed social worker, she worked with Spring Grove State Hospital in Catonsville, MD, and started the Family Liaison Program for developmentally disabled children at Newhope Industries in Mansfield. She also taught English at Mansfield Senior High School.

Mrs. Kaplan enjoyed traveling and visited many places with her

late husband, including Russia, Japan, France, Italy, Austria,

Germany, Holland, Switzerland, Finland, Sweden, Czechoslovakia,

Hungary, Yugoslavia, Ireland, Great Britain, Panama, Mexico,

Canada, Puerto Rico, Bermuda, and the Caribbean. She also traveled

to Egypt, where she conducted research for her graduate degree.

A member of the National Organization for Women, Mrs. Kaplan

attended St. Peter’s Catholic Church.

She is survived by daughters Stephanie Barnet Kaplan of Salter

Path, NC, Tamis Kaplan (William Wright) of Jacksonville, NY,

Kimberly Kaplan of Hillsborough, NC, and Becky Kaplan of Columbus;

Wright and Aidan Kaplan-Wright both of Jacksonville, NY; and great-

grandchildren Jason and Andrew Eagleston.

Her husband Jerome “Jerry” Kaplan passed away December 20, 2009

She is remembered for her sense of humor, curiosity about

people and the world and her scintillating conversations.

Her funeral services were held, Monday, April 18, 2011 in the

Finefrock Chapel of the Marion Avenue Snyder Funeral Home, 350

Marion Avenue, Mansfield, Ohio 44903 (419-525-4411). Father Tom

McQuillen officiated. Burial was in Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, MN.
